Hi all,

My senior dog, (10 year old with mild hip dysplasia), has annoyingly unfortunately been over exercised by a relative who had been looking after him for the afternoon for me... I'm talking about 2 hours on and off playing chase in the garden.

He's a lively, healthy dog for his age, sometimes a bit stiff with his hips/legs but not always.

Anyway, this afternoon he is now very stiff due to doing too much and I'm wondering if its worth giving him a dose of metacam with his dinner tonight. Not sure if one dose would have any benefit?

It's previously been prescribed for him so I know he is fine with it, bottle in date and within use by.

I know with rest he'll be ok in the next day or two but hate to see him struggling to get about and not sure how to alleviate his discomfort short term.

Any tips/experiences would be much appreciated.

For short term, a lukewarm wheat bag or hot water bottle applied to the sore areas can help. The Metacam would help too. Going forwards, it might be of use to have him on Yumove, and a regular pain killer, if he is presenting as stiff on occasion.

Thank you, will try him with a lukewarm hot water bottle shortly and give the metacam a go. He is on Yumove, been on it for a few years now and it seems to help. Have been thinking about getting a vet referral to try out hydrotherapy too. Thanks again

Lucky dog to have such a thoughtful, caring owner.
If your dog has to go to this relative again, can they be trusted not to over-excercise him if told about the negative effects of their actions?
In the meantime, heat, rest and metacam should help.

Thank you. Yes, they feel quite bad about it as I've already mentioned it to them. They didn't realise that what they were doing would have such a negative impact, but I'm confident it won't happen again.

I've given him some metacam now and he's got a warm blanket over his back legs, fast asleep on his orthopaedic bed! The things we do for our pets ?

Thank you everyone for your help and fingers crossed he recovers soon.
