I have posted earlier on here that senior PPID mare’s future was under review. She has been a little dull, a little wobbly and not her usual self for the last few weeks.

Clipping her out did perk her up, but then I noticed that she was very sore over her top line. Regular vet came out for annual jabs and her 6 monthly ACTH assay, and agreed to put her on Danilon and for me to get the chiro vet out to her.

Chiro vet worked her magic, and will be coming back to treat her again when she next does my other two. Also, her ACTH levels were very low for the second successive time, so with regular vet approval I dropped her daily Prascend dosage from 2.0 to 1.5 tablets per day.

Results are very promising :). Senior mare has her mojo back, is off the Danilon and is doing 10 minutes in hand in the school every day over poles.

I’m very much a month too soon than a day too late person re keeping my animals going, but I’m glad that the various twiddles to her management seem to have worked.

Plus my farrier has corrected the awful long toe/low heel foot balance that she acquired during my dalliance with the world of barefoot trimmers.

Here she is out in the field today, and a head pic from earlier.

She’s only 19 yo, bless her, which these days is nothing for many equines, but she had an early diagnosis of PPID, and it led her to lose a lot of muscle and top line. Hence me retiring her.

It’s great to have her back on form. She still has the most fabulous paces, here she is showing off a few days ago.

She looks in cracking condition. Glad she’s had a reprieve .
I’ve been in the same position with Asha , she’s 22 now and the past week or two hasnt been herself . Before that she was amazing and having lots of fun bucking / playing etc .
She came in quite lame the other day , I was panicking bringing her in . Turns out she has thrush in both front feet . Will have to keep an eye on her as she’s never suffered from that before . Might be time to retest for cushings.
These oldies do keep us on our toes .

Don’t they just!

Good luck with Asha, the thrush could well be causing her footiness. As of a few weeks ago, the vets were only doing ACTH blood pulls if they were already coming out to you for something else that they deemed important enough for a visit - annual flu jabs in my case. Maybe all those rules are more relaxed now.

I’d decided nearly two years ago that I wouldn’t put senior mare through any major treatments for illness or injury, since when she’s mostly done very well up until the recent worry.

She looks fab :)

It's always such a worry with older horses! Mine is 27 and I'm constantly stressing about is she ok, how is she moving etc.

Mads is 27 too and every time I think she's slowing down she does something that would be ridiculous in a 3 year old; on Tuesday out hacking she jumped an electric fence into a cattle field because there was a patch of flat grass on the track
