Uhm.. what did the instructor think was going to happen when the poor pony was to be collected. Hey kids go stand in the corner and watch while we winch the dead pony I've just told you to ride around for the last half hour into the truck.

That's not a pretty sight for an adult, let alone kids.

Absolutely not acceptable in my mind.

Hearing what people are saying.

However the words "bad taste", "insensitive", and "callous" come to mind.

Yes appreciate the trainer had obviously planned a day of teaching and this incident butted into their routine and disrupted it; also appreciate that people had travelled a good way to get to the venue perhaps - but at the end of the day if you can't show compassion when something like this happens then that surely says a lot about you??

Best thing would have been to have taken everyone else away from where the incident had occurred so that none of the horses were upset further, and just do a quick check to make sure everybody was OK and let them chat-through stuff if needed, bearing in mind that not everyone has had experience of what happens when a horse has to be euthanised. Then send everyone home and refund them. Surely there's nothing else that could have been decently done in circumstances like this?

This is quite shocking particularly considering it was a children's pony.

Maybe the pro was in shock and not thinking clearly. It must have traumatic to have a pony PTS in the middle of the clinic.

I would have expected them to stop the clinic for the rest of the day or at the very least until the body had been removed.

I appreciate it might be costly for the pro to refund people and have to pay for the arena hire if the clinic didn't continue but the children who witnessed this must have been upset and traumatised.

I cannot quite believe that they thought it would be ok for children to have a lesson whilst there is dead pony in the area. As an adult I would not have coped with that.

It sounds like if people have travelled a long way for the clinic and that was the reason for suggesting it that potentially the pro was a big name who doesn't normally do clinics and thought that the children would be disappointed that their session was cancelled and they would want the lesson so much that they would go ahead with dead pony there even though a tragedy had occurred, because the lesson with the pro was so special it could not be missed etc.

We had one PTS in a stable during a kids party when I was on livery at the RS. It had collapsed so kindest thing for the pony. Hung rugs over the stable and carried on smiling for another hour. The kids knew nothing thankfully but it was horrendous. Sent all the helpers off to the indoor to play games with one of the older girls when it was collected (not an easy collection).

I never dreamed of inflicting that on the children. It was 3 days before Xmas too.

oh I'm sorry that sounds so sad. But seems like it was dealt with respectfully, both on the care of the childrens side and respect for the pony. Getting them out of a stable is not easy.

Definitely wouldn't inflict a dead pony's removal on children, it would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Could you imagine the poor child that owned the pony then hearing about how their best friend was removed... no thanks.

I would wonder once word gets out as to who the pro was would many continue to use them. Business might be a bit quiet for them until this passes.
