Sensible budget for a first horse

Yes it’s the doing it with a smile that would be key I think!

Do people think that a full loan might be better before buying then or is it actually less easy to find a suitable horse that way?

You might find an older horse that needs to step down. Potentially might need a bit of veterinary support (bute/joint injections). Don’t be put off by that, the cost is negligible in the grand scheme of horse ownership v gaining experience.

Just my experience. I bought an older (16) ex eventer, been there, done it type. Was £2.5k with tack. Had her on loan for a few months first. Taught me loads and helped with my confidence.

I am frankly bloody amazed that figures of £5-8K are being bandied about for a first, novice horse tbh. While I agree they are worth heir weight in gold, it is just a saying ;) and would expect to be able to buy something safe and sensible for under £3K.

Up to 5k should give you a good range and certainly would expect lots within that range. Agree for something less upmarket, should get something below thatmbut equally for something spot on with a bit more quality and ability, that would push the range upwards.

Very exciting! Would endorse the above advice and also recommend really trying to get something that’s proven for what you want ie has been with a novice rider/owner. They can unravel if you take something that’s sensible with a competent rider but unproven with a novice.

If you're lucky you get what you pay for and you'll be paying a realistic price - ie what the seller thinks the horse is worth! Local knowledge is a bonus and many schoolmaster types do go by word of mouth, definitely letting people know locally what you're looking after. Have you considered a large breed M&M they will do most things but sadly they also won't be easy to find as many of the schoolmaster types will not be advertised and will command a 'fair' price, equivalent to the amount t work/time put into them.
