So I'm miserable and when I'm like this my great idea to winter without a horse is, well, not so great and i want one. I think i just miss the owning of a horse, not particularly the riding in the crappy weather, losing the light and dealing with the mud but the fussing and caring and the knowledge its mine and not a share or anyone else's!

So I have three acres and stables sitting empty at home and I've seen a rather beautiful laid back ex racer for sale. He is three so in my reasoning I'm thinking buy him, turn him out for the winter to let him down and do a bit more maturing and tick him over with day to day handling, fussing, walks out ect and then start his re education come spring when the weather and daylight hours are on my side ... and frankly when i am more in the mood to ride, lol!

Ok sensible headed people ... talk me out of it please and for all those enablers .. talk me into it :D

I tried mine on a New Year’s Day and a few days later she arrived ? at the time I worked in private client tax too so January was full of 70 hour+ weeks I’m afraid you’ve come to the wrong forum to talk you out of buying a horse ?.

I actually think winter is the best time to buy as you normally get a better deal plus you can use the rubbish weather to work on groundwork and your “bond” for want of a better word. Can learn their likes and dislikes and any ridden quirks so come spring summer you can crack on and have fun! Although that obviously doesn’t apply so much in your case to a 3 year old!

I don’t really get the “don’t buy coming into winter” thing... unless it’s a proper project pony that you don’t want eating potential profit. But if you’re planning on keeping him then you’ll have many more winters to contend with anyway and like you’ve said it’s perfect time for a let down period.

You wouldn’t even have to buy a companion, rescues are bursting at the seams. So really by getting a horse that needs a companion you’ll be doing a good deed??

I think if your in between horses, for me anyway, its just nice to have a winter off before jumping back into the hobby :) Other than that there isnt any real reason not to buy now.

Get the ex racer life is too short then get a companion they can easily live out on 3 acres in winter with hay, my 2 stay out most of the time and fed hay and I have less field space than you.

I've got a pony arriving tomorrow, so I'm hoping there will still be at least a few nice weeks left before the real slog of winter starts!

I think it sounds like an ideal time to get a 3yo, and he'll be ready to start doing something spring next year!

I think this is a masterly plan and you should go ahead with it ASAP. He is clearly calling to you and it never does to ignore siren voices.;) You will, of course, need a companion - any of the racehorse re-homing charities would, I am sure, be happy to help!!!!!
