hi,
i am thinking about getting a girth sleeve for my horse, as he has become very sensitive aroud the girth when brushed etc, and it was very notciable when he was clipped.
i currently ride him in a jeffreis leather atherstone girth that is cleaned every time i ride him, plus he gets washed off and dried when ridden, so its not rubs from sweat etc.
do any of you have any girth sleeve suggestions, maybe thinking of the prolite one, or maybe even a different kind of girth all toghther???

thanks

thorowgood girths are brilliant, i have a grey sensitived skinned mare and have never had a problem, you can wash them down easily

Professional Choice girths all the way. Have had a made to order leather girth (nice and wide and soft!) and a throwgood girth and both made him sore and grumpy! The Pro choice has made a previously girthy horse nicer to tack up,a nd is so soft and comfy, he seems really happy in it

KatB- where did you get your proffesional choice girth from, and which one have you got??? i found a website but theres a variety of options for differing styles, types of wool etc? they look nice though!

I had this problem as my grey has a permanent bald patch which I assume was rubbed from a girth before I got him.

I tried a leather girth, also a sheepskin sleeve - but I found with the sheepskin, he sweated under it. Best one Ive found is the Stubben string girth. Its really wide and is a nice soft material. Just bung it in the wash once a week is what I do. He seems to really like it and its never rubbed yet and he doesnt sweat under it.

I use the string girth for schooling / indoor competing etc. but not when using studs obviously (in case they got caught!) - for that I use the Comfort Zone stud girth which has been fine on him too.

My horse had a sensitive area on his side where his girth goes (there's a little hard padded bit within his normal Wintec chafeless girth at that spot), and so the saddler suggested I use a Prolite pad as it's uniformly cushioning, rather than sheepskin. My horse does seem more comfortable with it.

thanks KatB- its our euine fair this weekend so i'll get an eye out for one, it looks nice though- early xmas pressie for the horse i think

magicmelon- mmm i used to have a stubben string girth on my old horse, not sure if itl fit my new boy thou, ill dig it out and try. i used to really like it, but some people got funny cos they thought it was old fashioned. might be worth a try

has anyone tryed the prolite girth sleeve?

i would go with the ProLite girth sleeve option too.
their boots and saddle pads are brilliant, no slippage and no rubs, and so soft and squidgy. my sisters horse had white patches starting on his back and until we found a better saddle for him we used a prolite pad and th white marks went again when he changed his coat.

my prolite boots have never slipped or turned or anything out hunting in 3years of some of the boggiest country around.

Can I ask - when you say your horses are getting sore and grumpy, are you noticing this when you are brushing them or do you also get problems when doing up girth?

Having some probs with Spooks at the moment, have the back lady coming out on Tues, but am trying to think of all othe options in the mean time!!

no there seems to be no grumpiness when i do up the girth, its just when i brush him, and very noticable when he was clipped. he was just very sensitive in the girth and elbow area, so i think that maybe the girth is rubbing him slightly, or even bruising? although there are no outward signs
