One of my boys has very sensitive legs - if he is stabled more than 12 hours his legs fill up and also the first sign of mud they fill up.

As he does not like being in he lives out 24/7. With the rain over the last few days his legs have filled up already! Do you think i should try him with Pig Oil and Sulpher - do i bring him in wash and dry legs then apply all over?

How do i mix it?
How often do you re-aply it?
Pros and Cons?
Should i try this on all my horses or just him?

It shouldn't do any harm and lots of people swear by it so worth a go, but if he is v sensitive then I would do a patch test first. The less fiddling you can do with sensitive legs the better. Apply to clean dry legs so poss worth rinsing at night then keeping in and applying in the morning (no rubbing with towels etc!). Then leave alone. Oh mares legs swell up overnight when she is kept in, we have found stable wraps help quite a bit, but it causes her no probs and she walks them off fairly quickly when turned out or ridden so it is more so we feel we are doing something about it!

My mares legs get filled when she stays in, moreso now post a kick injury. So I bandage them at night, but have started her on some nettle herbs and cleavers and Marigold in her feed which are supposed to help alot. So hoping in a bit, she can have the bandages off.

I also use pig oil and sulpher. You can buy it from ebay made up very cheaply, just remember to shake well.

DO A PATCH TEST FIRST

But basically clean the legs make sure they are dry and then sponge the pig oil all over the legs (not too much so it's dripping or anything) and I basically repeat this every now and then, i.e as often as you need. Its good stuff as it keeps the legs clean and if they come in at night more often then not the mud just comes off with the deep bed of straw I have found. The mud never truely sticks that bad, because of the base of pig oil. Obviously make sure your horse does not actually have any mud fever prior to putting it on, i.e no open cuts etc

Hope this helps.x

My daughter has a mare with sensitive legs. When she put pig oil and suphur on her legs she had a bad reaction to it....not on her legs but under her tummy where her legs had touched when she laid down in her stable. She came out in large swellings which lasted a couple of days. I have a cob and use it on him with no problems so do make sure to do a patch test and wait to see if there is any bad reactions before applying it the next day.
