Hi everyone, my name is Sarah and, after a lifetime of owning geldings, I am the new owner of a sensitive 5yr old mare. I am suspicious that she may have stomach ulcers. Her breeder has said she has been treated for them in the past and that she has always been crabby in the stable. I would like to treat her with natural/herbal products if possible. She has 24hr access to grass and to her stable if flies are bad. She has a companion who she likes. Her coat is good but she wind sucks at feed times or after treats. She is a little girthy and very much dislikes being brushed under her belly. She is a mare with good breeding and high potential for dressage. She is relaxed when being hacked or schooled. She was shown in hand successfully as a 2 and 3 yr old at the big county shows. I really want her to be more comfortable and to gain her trust. She has been with me less than a month.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know if a good natural herbal product?
Thank you in advance.

As ycbm says, Aloe Vera juice works extremely well. When I bought the Draft mare shewasextremely grumpy. I knew that she had been fed a high starch/sugar diet and that her tack didn't fit well, as she had become overweight in a short time. I rectified all that and added AVJ to her fibre based diet. She was only ever grumpy afterwards if we ran out of juice.

I would follow management for ulcers: two days off work a week, two hay nets in different parts of the stable to keep her moving, a handful of forage ten minutes before work (or access to hay) and probiotics can help. As other posters have said, aloe vera juice can get good results.

You could also look at feed because that can have a big impact.

I would try the above for a few weeks but if she doesn't improve or gets worse, you may wish to consider having her scoped.
