My two four year olds that have been together all their lives are going their separate ways. Milo is going to sales livery about 45 minutes away and Seamus is staying here with me for a few weeks until he goes to my son in the UK for work experience. Two middle aged donkeys arrived last Friday to keep Seamus company. I haven’t put them together but they’ve touched noses over the gate. Today Milo and Seamus are in separate fields where they can see each other. Seamus is calling intermittently and I feel so worried and unhappy that I am causing them stress. My position is that I can’t ride one out of sight of the other so hacking is out of the question and Milo is too much horse for me at my age and much better suited to someone younger and more able. Furthermore he needs to be working now as he is an intelligent, active and sparky horse whereas Seamus is more laid back. Olivia, who is taking Milo on sales livery, will collect him at her convenience after I give her the nod and I’ll put the donkeys in with Seamus. They are only little but seem well able to look after themselves and Seamus is a gentle soul. I am very worried that Milo will kick up a fuss on the transport when he realises Seamus isn’t getting on with him so I’ll ask Olivia to load and immediately go in the hope he settles down soon enough. There is no point to this thread really, I’m just winding myself up about what is a very normal life event for horses, but not so much for me. Any reassurance, experiences, constructive advice would be very welcome as always.
