My lovely next door neighbours have got themselves a springer puppy. Mum works 9 to 5 and Dad works shifts, so often when he's at home he'll be sleeping. This puppy has major separation problems and cries constantly when left.

I've never experienced this as I've never had a dog on its own so I don't have any advice to offer, they leave the radio on etc.

I take the dog out to the yard. It's only happy when he's right at your side, he cries if I leave him tied up while I ride.

I pop one of my terriers around to his house to keep him company, and he's fine for a while.

Dunno what to do really. Lovely neighbours but their dog isn't my responsibility and I don't know what advice to give them.

Any advice gratefully appreciated!
 
Ooh, I guess the puppy' about 5 months. His family is away for about 9 hours in the worst scenario, that's why I'm puppy sitting a bit.

His owners are at home now but I can hear him whining 'cos he's not in the same room. I don't know how they can stand it, drives me mad, like a baby crying!
 
I have speration guides im willing to share, however I could not condone crate trainign if the dog/pup will be left 9 hours:eek: maybe a baby gate guide, and no the guide does not say (pop a baby gate up) it's very detailed:p but 9 hours left alone really is not acceptible for such a young pup.
 
Cayla's SA advice is great and helped me through a difficult patch with my boy.

However I do agree a pup should not be left for 9 hours alone (in fact personally, I feel that is too long for a dog of ANY age)
 
My gsp suffers with this and I followed Cayla's guide which works really well. But we have never left him that long. Having another dog doesnt help my dog he is a bit worse is 100% on his own but company doesnt cure him and it is making the dog independ. My dog get long walks, goes dog training once a week, agility training this all tires him so when he is left he is ready for a sleep.
 
Thanks all, the family may be away for a max of 9 hours, usually less than that. However, I'm around to pick up, family doesn't realise the extent of the distress, new owners.

Ok, I will send you a puppy guide as opposed to crate guide (as the crate guide is in there) and the puppy tips may help and may be better for you to say "oh, read this puppy guide":D I will just hunt it out in emails and smashed my computer in a rage (well 3rd computer so using OH's and lost all my documents) but have it in sent mail.
