hi all, any tips on how to deal with separation anxiety - i have two horses at home one been on box rest the last three months now able to be turned out in a small paddock - the whole time the other has been kept in too or in the field next to him - now we are started to have issues with bringing one in without the other ! does anyone have any tips to try and separate them ? i r do not want to take on a livery and im not keen on taking on other horse - although i think my only option at present is to find a companion that will happily sit out in the field and not be bothered by one being taken away

i must add i cant just leave mine to run around as he is still recovery from a fractured pedal bone

Have you tried sedation can you put the other one in a very small pen next to him.

Or I might be inclined to leave them both in until the other one can go out.

How long is it until the other one can go out?

I've got 2 at home 1 will happily stay in on his own with the other one in the field, the other one won't and will go berserk I have in the past kept them both in sedation did help a bit but I don't get long until he starts again.

My big horse has separation anxiety- I'm afraid I solved the issue by buying him his own companion pony!

He is fine if I take him out but will not be left in a field or stable alone, without causing himself injury.

before the accident he was fine to leave the yard by himself but not happy about being left - with this injury I'm not able to do anything with him - and he is meant to stay calm in stable and his paddock - which is the case all the time the other horse is around - but at present we cant take the other anywhere without upsetting the poorly one - its just so exhausting - I'm thinking when he is sound and ready to start work im going to struggle due to this anxiety :(

Coligone liquid, lifesaver! Pidge lost his soulmate just over 2 years ago. Serious separation anxiety as he would have a meltdown even if we took Sunny out of sight on the yard. 50ml of Coligone 30mins before sis takes Bonnie out and Pidge is then safe being left on his own. Couldn't use sedation from vets so had to find a solution. I honestlya still gobsmacked at how well it works. Seriously takes away any worry about him being left on his own.

Will the recuperating one stay reasonably calm in his stable while the other is being ridden? In his stable with a large, stainless steel, wall mirror? Because that's worked well in a similar situation. Turn both back out again when other's finished his activities.
Another solution we hit on was borrowing a retired tup (ram, a male sheep), which animal was completely independent, yet provided sufficient bodily presence to satisfy the 'abandoned' horse. They got quite pally, tup would duck under the bar and bed down with that horse, and far less commitment than buying another pony.
However, the Coligone wheeze sounds an outright winner - only wish I'd known!

ON LOOKING THIS LOOKS LIKE A GUT SUPPLEMENT - HE IS ON POTESSUIM BROMINDE TWICE A DAY 10ML WHICH HAS TAKEN THE EDGE OFF BUT STILL ACTS LIKE DICK - HE ALSO HAS ALL THE TOYS AND A LARGE HORSE MIRROR IN HIS STABLE - THE PROBLEM IS VERY MUCH HIS HORSE FRIEND . sad reality is they need more then just the two of them - they are herd animal - just didn't really want to but them on livery or take on a livery nor do we want the responsibility of another pony - I'm just hanging on in there o see when my poorly one comes right i can work him again and things will settle - thank you all for your comments i will look into them :) HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK TAKEN ON A COUPLE OF SHEEP ?

It is a gut supplement, but to me it is a life-saver as I honestly would have had to put Pidge down without it. Got to be worth a try?
