anyone got any suggestions on helping a horse with his separation issue with one other horse??? his fine if hes completely separated (cnt see his friend) for a descent time but its the initial separating or when i take his friend for a ride and it doesnt seem to help even having other horses around him
any thoughts???

O
I can't help , but would love to know as I'm having exactly the same problem at the moment with one of my youngsters
He is completely in love with one of my others and completely loses the plot if I take him out despite two others being left with him
I just shut him in the box now and let him get on with it

The only thing I do when they are like this is to just keep seperating them.

Recently had to teach my almost 2 yo that if you spent time in the stable with other horses (ie not her friends) and then by yourself that you wouldn't die!

A few times taking her friends away but leaving a different horse by her, after a few initial dramas and stress she was fine.

Then taking her friends and leaving her alone (not for a long time to begin with, just a few mins and gradually building up to about 40 mins) There was screaming and drama to begin with. Now ive done it about 10 times she might call once but will still just stand and munch her hay.

I wouldn't leave her for much longer than that as shes just a baby but with a older horse I'd just keep going, keep seperating them for a few hours and I'm sure it will improve. You just have to grit your teeth to the screaming to begin with!!

thanks vickijay, thats what i have been doing for abit mainly taking him away waiting for him to settle and then riding him then he returns to his friend and he seems to be abit better but now its still a huge issue if his friend leaves him, we went into the paddock just next door and he still felt the need to call out to him haha but think it is just time, but my main problem is i want to start taking him out to shows but dont want him to be all worked up if his friend doesnt come or when his friend has to go be riden and hes left at the truck (hes learnt to pull back) thanks heaps :)
