If the weathers fit i plan to seperate my mare and foal on sunday. Rozie is going back to the place i got her from for the weaning process and assessment (to see if shes still grumpy once away from her foal).

I plan to put Jasper in with the two little guys in the field next door (who he already knows over the fence). Should i leave him loose in the field (with new friends and food for distraction) While i lead mum away and in to the box as quick as possible? Or do we think he will be better in a stable with new companions around, or in a confined space outside the stable? Any advice appreciated.

could you put him in the stable with a friend he knows? i do agree with the above that if they can hear one another its dangerous. But i feel that it would be really stressful for the foal to all of a sudden be shut away in the dark on his own.
Could you possibly take the foal and mare at the same time and like you say get the mare out of ear shot asap and in the mean time occupy the foal in the field untill she has gone? Im sure he will be more interested in his friends at that point? Good luck anyway its so stressfull i know!
