first of all you spray off the weeds, this is easiest with a broad leave spectrum spray- that way you can do the whole field quickly rather than walking round with a spot sprayer, wait two weeks and then fertilise and reseed together. The field can be harrowed just before you fertilise/reseed so the dead thatch grass is taken out.

Not advisable to fertilise at seeding as the fertiliser will burn the young plants. Spray the weeds followed by fertiliser. Wait for several good rains to wash fertiliser into the soil. Then direct drill the seed in.

Ideally you should reseed in autumn when the weeds have done their dash.

Direct drilling cuts a line in the soil and drops the seed below the surface. Scattered seed is likely to be eaten by birds and up young plants take longer to establish.
