My lovely mare just went ape-sh** in the school with me and bronked like a rodeo. She has had some time off recently and this is her 2nd 15 min schooling session in months. I knew she was well up for it as soon as we got into the school and, coming up to the 15 min marker - cross the centre line and yea-haaaaaa she leaped through the air punching out with left fore then right - head between the knees, spun then dropped her shoulder. The first couple of half halts didnt work so I used the time served 'take back teeth out half halt' which bought us to a standstill, phewwww. I heard myself laughing nervously, then she was off again - full throttle reverse thrust, double spin, sit on the haunches and launch through the air. Now, Im wondering if I gave her the aids for Levade

Have witnessed Partoow doing this, but it didnt quite look the same

I did let her have an hour out on rather lush grazing lastnight - could it be the feelgood factor? Anyone else having similar experiences?

My goodness Lywyncwn, did you actually manage to stay on?

Can't say I've exerienced that lately - thankfully!

Possibly time of year, this sounds just like what my boy gets up to around now!
I've learnt over the years the best thing to do is sit quietly and ride it out, if I move he just does it harder and higher than before. Since I've done that he has been much better because I think he realises he can't get a reaction out of me.

yes!!!

i came off a few weeks ago-first time he'd bucked on me ever

keep on hearing about other people's horses taking a funny turn and having a bucking do

seems to be the in thing at the moment, naughty hosses

my mare used to do this on a fairly regular basis.cut her feed down
and i also got her saddle re checked.
urns out the trigger factors for her were restricted turnout and my leg aids being to hard on her 'mare areas' LOL

well sat!
umm, if you knew she felt like that, i'm impressed at your bravery, that you didn't lunge for a little bit first, let her get it out of her system without firing you skywards! i think the cold breeze today, after a few warmer days, doesn't help at all. mine aren't doing bronco billy at the moment, thank god, as i don't appreciate it, but never say never...

Thanks all - glad to know Im not on my own! The Sue Carson saddle fitter is coming out soon to re-fit, maybe that was part of it. She isnt normally like this, in fact it's out of character for her. When we began trot work I found it difficult to contain the energy and think I may have shifted my weight over the centre line

I did put my legs on her during all this to send her forward but Im ashamed to say that my bottle went a bit, so I scratched her neck and gave her a loose rein to cool off

Sooooo need some lessons.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

My baby did the same to me today!!!

Went out for his first hack on his own then came back to do a bit of trot and canter. fine in trot, asked for canter and got huge rodeo broncing and spinning he could have put a rodeo bull to shame. How i stayed on i have absolutely no idea!!!

Did manage to get canter on both reins with a few small bum hops after that.

give her a few mins on a lunge before hopping on, if shes feeling well it may let her get it out of her system, it will also give you a chance to see shes moving ok ect.
