Serious question RE: money

People at work feel sorry for me because I never go away on holiday. Yes, I am too poor to go away, but I wish they'd understand that I don't want one anyway because the best possible holiday I could have is a whole week at home riding my horse. :D

I'm very aware that I'm fortunate to have a husband with a good job who pays all the bills which therefore allows me to spend 'my' money on my horses - which he never says a word about bless him. I'm very concious that in this economic climate no ones job is 100% safe though and situations can change quickly. I like to have some 'back up' money saved away just in case. I also think that regardless of what you earn you spend it on what interests you. If our income increased then I would just spend more on the horses rather than clothes, shoes or extra holidays because that is what I would rather spend my time doing and my money on. My husband on the other hand would have another car and a lot more X-box games!!!

Well, the only way I / me and my sister can afford to have any horses is because we have our own land - or our parents do courtesy of money left in my gran's will many years ago! Without our own land I am not sure we would even have horses to be honest as livery yards are so expensive. I am not actually sure how people afford to keep horses on livery?!

At one point we had 8 horses (a mix of rideable ones and old crocks!) and the least amount we had was 3 I think. We now have 5 as I just bought a new youngster a couple of months ago to take over from my horse's 'jobs' when he retires. They basically all live out 24/7 in the summer and we have 12 acres so they do pretty well and only get token feed in the summer (to give the odd supplement etc). We don't compete that often but used to do a lot more BSJA etc. We do have a lorry that our parents sort of bought and we were paying monthly and myself and my sister contribute monthly to the horses' keep.

I guess i am pretty lucky but the downside is I work in a 9 to 5 office job so, certainly in the winter I don't get a lot of time to ride as we have no school so it'd too dark before or after work. But the job pays me enough so i am 'comfortable' should we say. i have also just bought my 1st house so I will be poorer! I have no kids though but also I don't have a partner so can't rely on them for help so I have to be sensible with money. I have zilch social life and I don't smoke (i do drinkmy wine at the weekends though! Lol)

I today's climate I actually think those people who smoke must be far richer than the likes of me. There is no way i could afford a packet of cigarettes every day! ha ha ha

I have worked since I left school and paid all my dues to the Government etc. Since retiring I have two horses. I dont smoke, drink, buy clothes or jewellery oor go on holiday.
My OH smokes and drinks and spends more a month on these than I do on my horses !Also I dont need to go to the gym to keep fit ! You spends your money and takes your choice as I see it, as long as you arent relying on others to fund your horsey habit (like some horsey moonlight flitters and people on all sorts of benefits who seem to be able to afford to have horses) its not anyones business

I work full time and luckily have a horsey mum who helps and rides so I can keep my new horse on diy. I dont go out drinking, I rarely buy myself new clothes, hair dos etc and I drive an old car!! I wouldnt be able to afford a horse without sacrifices. I actually babysit at the age of 31 yrs for extra money to pay for my lessons. Also I have a partner who helps with bills and rent at home, otherwise lord knows how I would afford it.

I think people do sometimes think you must be well off to have horses or even a snob in some cases, this is rubbish - I know very few people who own horses who are very well off!

I have eight, most outgrown ponies and a couple of youngsters. My husbands family can not understand it and used to make pointed remarks. When they ask me now I say too many and say they are pets. End of.
When my husband grumbles sometimes, I say would it make you any happier if I had none. As he doesn't look after them and has no hobbies of his own there is a deathly silence.
When I bought my last one I got a lecture of my daughter. I said ' I'm fifty, I am not having a affair, not down the shops every day buying clothes, don't smoke and she should shut up and be grateful especailly as I look after hers'
