Hi All any advice please ??????

I have owned my gelding for 18 months he has white legs, He constantly leaks liquid whilst pooing his poo's are solid but along with this comes roughly half a pint of brown liquid this goes all the way down the back legs and this happens every day, I am feeding alfa a with oil and calm an condition along with bio premium supplement for balancing the gut this problem is becoming very hard to manage he constantly smells he is messed up all the time his tale is full of poop all the time and his rugs stay clean for ten minutes, I have lost the will to take him out as no amount of bathing keeps him clean, he is up to date with worming and in generally good condition, can anyone help me as I am getting desperate for a solution !!!!

I think you need the vet to rule out a bowel problem. Loose poo or liquid means he's not absorbing nutrients properly. It could be old worm damage, colitis, something in his diet that doesn't agree with him, or many other things probably.

Thanks for all your comments yes it has happened for the last 18 months on and off I have spoken tot he vet prior to now I was advised that the problem was more of an inconvenience to me other than a painful ailment to the horse therefore I have not pursued it any further, I am on an established competition yard with very experienced people and instructors therefore I am not too concerned I am sure there would have been more than enough people to tell me had anyone thought my horse was suffering due to this problem.

I would like to hear from anyone else who has encountered this problem before hopefully some remedies that have been tried and worked would be good thanks all x

If on Haylage I would try switching to hay. I would also make the diet as sugar free as possible so switch alfa a to alfa mollasses free. Protexin Gut Balancer is the best pre/pro biotic I have found. I also feed Psyllium Husk for 5days when she gets sloppy. This seems to have dried up my mare.

I have had this problem either my mare if she is fed haylage. Since I am very allergic to hay I have tried various things to alleviate this! The only thing I have had any success with is adding charcoal to her feed! I have used gas eze which is activated charcoal as its what my feed store had. Happy tummy (non activated charcoal) may work as well but I've not tried it. Naff haylage balancer worked a bit, although I've heard others have had good results with it. The other product I was due to try was global herbs diareeze. The easiest solution would probably be to feed hay but if that's not possible then try the above.

Hi there - I had this problem with my new horse who prior to coming to me was turned out permanently on grass. At my yard coming into winter (and due to rubbish weather/lack of grazing) I had to supplement his diet. He's sooo picky and wouldn't touch hay, so bought him some ryegrass haylage which he loves but I believe was a bit too rich for his tummy resulting in scours. Fortunately he's bay with black socks so his legs weren't an issue but his tail was horrendous needing shampooing every day, not to mention the amount of bedding I was getting through.

I didn't rush off of the haylage wondering if it was a result of a massive change in circumstances, so wanted to give him a chance to acclimatise, I tried probiotic treatments to try and rebalance his gut and no, HATED it, although his condition didn't suffer at all his scours didn't improve after 6/7 weeks. He had started eating a bit of hay but was still really picky and won't eat enough of 'just hay' to keep his weight and condition, although it started to firm up his dungs a bit. I didn't want to introduce hard feed for the same (dicky tummy) reason, so picked up some haylage balancer. The improvement has been almost instantaneous. Initially I mixed it with a small cup of cooling mix, but now he has it out of my hand and hooray I have a normal dunging horse! It was about £19 for a pot that lasts 30 days if you feed 3 scoops a day, I am feeding 1 a day and it's working a treat and is probably saving me more than that in shavings for the same period.

Might be worth a try? Good luck!!
