Serious subject - How car drivers tackle overtaking horses.

I had to stifle a snigger but this ain't very nice at all! A few years back we had a spate of this in Meriden, Wark's. I just wish someone would do it to me so's I could jump off and thrash the bugger!

Surely it is their choice? I mean if they are just driving around naked and not doing anything threatening then there's no harm in it?
 
I got hit by a car yesterday and somehow my horse walked away without a scratch but I have never in my whole life been as rude or as cutting or abusive to another lady in my whole life - in hindsight I feel really bad cause it was a joint effort and the women must have been shaken up too but I was so panicked and stressed about my poor precious horse I just exploded.....

What were the events leading up to it? How scary for you.
 
It was horrible - he was on his toes anyway cause the lack of turnout is really messing with his head but she was coming past too fast and too close and could see that he was spooking at something (rubbish that had been dumped) but decided to pass anyway

I always try to pass smoothly, in a gear higher than I normally would be in to limit engine noise (given what I'm driving is either a silly sports car, or a diesel). Suspect I lean towards option 3 (but staying back a fair amount) as I'm not fantastic at overtaking anything, and won't overtake on a blind bend, and get nervous being waved past when I can't see - perils of low cars...

Most of the riders I've come across in Devon are really good - they trot to the nearest passing place - there's no way you're going to get past on most of the lanes - the car feels wide enough...
 
Arwen, I nearly did. Fall off I mean. We galloped back to yard like the clappers (tut tut galloping on the road) rang the police, and alerted the Yard Brats NOT to go hacking out that day, just in case. The Yard Brats then came over all Thelwellian and wanted to go out on their ponies and chase the nasty man with shovels and pitchforks. Yeah, that'll teach him!!

But most embarrasing of all was a very young lad of a policeman got sent out to take a statement from us, 'us' being middle aged women. he had to ask us if the naked man appeared, ahem, 'excited'. Well riders, that poor young PC could hardly speak for stuttering, and he was brick red in the face. Poor kid I bet he was wishing he'd never joined the force....!

wasn't entirely my fault though and we certainly weren't plodding but were on our way home from a rather eventful hack and there was no gap large enough for us to all pull into safely.
 
The people in the village where the yard is hate the horses, cos they pooh in their lovely posh village! And since the streets are quite narrow, we end up causing rather massive traffic jams, but pull in to the side whenever we can to let them past. All the horses are pretty traffic proof, so I don't mind them going too fast, its the too close thing that worries me.
And since a lot of people I know from school live there and recognise me and my friends, there's the classic 'roll down the window, beep the horn and make childish neighing noises'. That's a fun one...

I'd like to add another category of driver - those who spot you about two miles away, slam the brakes on, reverse another half mile up the road into a layby, turn the engine off and wait for you to plod slowly past about 20 minutes later - and then look pissed off because it all took so long. Yes, thankyou for stopping, but don't get in a huff with me because you were overcautious! I hate feeling obliged to trot on because someone has stopped unneccessarily.

same thing happened to me a while ago my mare had just spooked (1st time in her life) well i say spooked she stuck her bum in the middle of the road cause a boys was making silly noises and swinging a baseball bat in the bushes driver decides to try to overtake anyway ponio takes one more step back and sat on the back of their car their excuse was i was "crawling past as slow as possible" come on would you over take a horse in the middle of the road ?

i also hate the drivers that feel the need to drive along side you shouting that its illegal to ride horses on the road so i should get on the path you wouldnt belive the number of times that has happened

I always try to pass wide and slow as we have a lot of race-horses and hunters around here but I did get really pi**ed off with one girl who was riding with the reins hooked over one arm, a fag in one hand and a mobile to her ear. She was totally oblivious of my presence - I wound the window down, and looked directly up at her coming towards me and she didn't even see me. Poor ol' horse looked a bit of a plod - bl**dy good job too!!

Ah but the guy I'm on about was masturbating at the time to a young girl on a horse who in her elevated position would be the only person able to see what he was doing. Sadly, despite the fact he drove past this girl about 4 times in the space of 30 minutes, CPS didn't think this was harrassment of any kind and threw it out.
