after my last near mishap of buying a new horse. I have been riding a 14.2hh jumping pony for the last 4 days (think head groom felt sorry for me!) been in the school for 3 days he is perfectly schooled and a joy to ride. This morning i hacked him out with a freind and he was wonderfull - we only walked - went along the stubble fields and along a track next to the busy A14 - there were no big lorries as it was sunday but lots of fast cars and motorbikes and he didnt even look - went under the bridge under A14 and on a big open green then back - he didnt pull, spook, or attempt to trot - he was just perfect!!!
Great! I hear you all cry - but as usual its not that simple! He is 15 years old and the owner wants serious money for him - which to an up and coming child who wants to do dressage and jumping he would be worth the money - but to do pre lim hack and do some pleasure rides at 15 he is more than i would be prepared to pay.
The owner is back tomorrow so im going to lay my cards on the table and say that i could/would only pay half the money they want - or maybe they would consider loaning him to me (dont think that would be likely!) or maybe could i ride him till they sell him.
Bit of a pointless post really but it helps to write it all out and see what responses i get - thanks x

If they want a lot of money for him I'd doubt they'd let him go for half price. There are plenty of other nice ponies around, I would keep looking until you find one in your price range.

I agree no harm in trying, you never know - they may say no to start with but if they can't sell soon then may accept your offer if they know its a good home etc.
Good luck.

Glad he went so well for you. I think it is well worth offering the amount you have in mind. He hasn't been sold yet has he and it will soon be the end of the summer and there will be lots of ponies on the market, so they may not find a buyer for him that easily. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - if you are meant to have him, you will - otherwise there will be one out there for you somewhere.

Agree absolutely with Meltdown. We have our lovely mare simply because we asked. Not a novice ride but easy peasy if you know how! Fate stepped in as owner was at wits' end just as we rang. You have to try and if they say no, then it isn't meant to be. I have my fingers crossed for you that home is more important than price.

I agee, its worth a try, and at 15 they may not be able to get the sort of money they want, often its at thaty age that arthritis etc starts to set in, especialy if the pony has been jumped hard in the past. I will keep my fingers crossed for you too.

if the ponys for you i would find the money the ponys good nature and weath of experence and safe as houses you cant pot a price on please dont be pot off by age my ponys 16 and is so cool she gave me my convidence back over huge fences she is still improving all the time i warldnt sell her for all the money in the would and i still have alot planned out for my pony with my little cusin grows i will aim it at winter jc and fox secand rounds and the pony will be 19 then and she will be 23 when my cusin will be out of juniurs but have every faih that my pony will still do it she won blue chip natnal championships at 14 dont foget ponys go on for ever look at some of the top ponys are still going in there 20 and 30 s a pony called campers was still jumping top 138 tracks in his 30s you can always have the pony vetted

Its worth a try but if hes worth it for his field, I would say they may well not take it! What sort of money are they wanting?
