I have 3 dogs.....

A JRT bitch, 5 years old
A Lakeland X Sausage dog, 2 years old
and.....

A 3 year old Greyhound bitch.
I have never had any skin problems with my 2 smalls, but the hound, who has lived all her life in kennels, has now come to me and is living in the house. She has now encountered a different diet and of course central heating!!
Her skin is appalling. She has become a prime advert for head and shoulders,

lol
I have her on a complete food, and am adding oil. I know the oils i would use for a horse, but.....
What is best for a dog, in what quantity and how long before i should expect to see results?????

Any ideas or advice appreciated, thanks in advance

LOL - I don't know if this is really the same but my labrador "sheds his skin" when he is nervous. We only have to get within a mile of the vets and he is covered in dandruff!

Your new dog may just need to get used to her new surroundings.

She has been with me since October, and is very well settled.
Nothing seems to bother her, she has had several vets visits due to a broken hock, she actually drags me in to the surgery, so it's not stress related i don't think

She has been regularly groomed to within an inch of her life,,, and has had many a tin of sardines

My dog has the same thing at the moment, I assume it is due to her starting to moult. It is clearing up with lots of brushing, baths with mild soap, and someone also told me to put cod liver oil in her feed

The food I buy has flax in it, but I also give an Omega 3 fish oil suppplement. Et voila, a very shiny indoor-domiciling dog.

(By the way, I never brush her and she only gets bathed every few months.)

I have a GSP who is very sensitive to dog food. I fed my dog on bakers, but after looking at the ingredients have been looking for a more natural food. So I recently changed her food to Autarky as it seemed to be a natural food with no nasties in it, but after 4 weeks on it she developed bumps on her back which were very scurfy and if you scratched them it was like snow. I have changed her diet back to Bakers for a little while, and it seems to have cleared it. So maybe your dog is allergic to the food you give her. My vet recommended Salters or James Welbeloved which I will be weaning my dog onto as Bakers seems to be full of colours and preservatives and names I can not pronounce. Hope this helps.

Wow Prose, she's super shiny. Wish my hair shone like hers. I do love seeing pics of her

Thanks everyone for your input. I will carry on with the oil and brushing. Will look at changing her diet with the next bag of feed

I hate to say it, but that is how my greyhound started off last November/December - the vet has now decided she has mange (even though she tested negative for it) and she is half bald

It started as non-itchy scurf, but really bad. I tried all the stuff you have said, gave her Omega-3 fish oil tablets (supplied at great expense by the vet

) and also tried sunflower oil at his suggestion - it didn't do any good - she was on Hills Science Diet so they couldn't fault that.

Then in January she suddenly got really itchy, and the mange-like symptoms developed - she is responding to treatment now, but it will be a long time before she is back to normal.

Sorry to potentially be the bearer of bad news, but it might be worth going to your vet just in case??
