....... getting someone to compete my horse for me. Show jumping and or cross country. Not a 'professional' I don't have that sort of money, but still done on some sort of financial footing I suppose.

I think he's a real talent - far too good for me really, and I am a complete wuss over a fence.

Thoughts??????

If I lived in Wales, Id offer to show jump him for you!

Can i ask why?????????

Why what - ask someone to compete him for me, think he's a talent, I'm a wuss......??

Im the same as you. My balls when it comes to jumping are very small

and my boy loves it. A friend of mine was riding him before he got poorly (her ned is kind of broken and wont compete again) and was hoping to compete him for me.

Once hes got over his colic she will be having lessons on him with the eventual hope that she will compete him when ready. It works nicely coz she can only really hack her horse and cant afford another one so will use Oscar.

I think its a great idea if you can find someone you trust with your pride and joy

For once Scoppy does have a point!

What about some lessons?

[/ QUOTE ]

Lessons won't do it - I'm generally pathetic, and got worse over the years. I will jump - but I just don't have the 'nerve' to go out and compete him (or any horse really).

Do you have your own transport? It can be quite fun to go to shows and watch someone else on your horse - but it is just as stressful

No, no transport - so he'd have to go to competitors and stay during competition time and lead up too...

But lord, it would give me a thrill to watch him competing.

I think it will work out very expensive if you don't take him to shows yourself. Is there anyone on your current yard who can jump him for you with transport?

I used to pay £20 a show for someone to jump mine, I took him there, paid the entry fees and he kept the prize money.

It is a thrill-- someone used to compete Molly for me doing dressage. However, I didn't agree a lot of the time with things she did, and I felt Molly was being taken over.
However that might have been a personality clash, but I'm sure you're not the sort of person to be ridden roughshod over!
How would you feel if Thumper got injured by somebody?

I think you have to accept that as a consequence of what you're asking the horse to do. It could just as easily happen with me....

Go for it, if you can find someone you trust enough, Ive lent frankie to a friend to do the PC area eventing on as her Dressage horse wouldnt do XC, I got as much excitement watching her do it as i do when i do it myself. Just take your time to find the right person

How do you know how talented your horse is unless you've jumped it already?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have jumped him (with my heart in my mouth) And have seen him jumped over coloured fences. Have a photo of him going over the biggest hedge I've ever seen - and he's bred for the job

Also do remember that he is NOT wasted with you. Do you think he really cares if he didn't ever jump again? It's only you that thinks this. But I do understand how you feel being as complete wuss myself

Ive done this in the past. She was a semi-professional i guess... but nothing major. I must admit i adored being an "owner".

I got to go to all the shows, i got to take home all the rossettes and trophies and occasionally, i warmed him up (which helped battle my nerves a bit also).

The only thing id say is that i think its going to be awkward for you since you stable on your own. For us, it was our YO who took him out and about (we'd bought him from her). He basically went where ever her own horses were going. We didnt pay diesel as hers were going anyway. We paid all his entry fees and of course, got to do the fun stuff like buy him pretty boots and saddle cloths

I really enjoyed it

At that time id lost my bottle completly with jumping (which, incidently, never came back regardless of the number of lessons ive had. Im STILL a nervous wreck with jumping now and my horse is safe as houses to jump). I felt part of the whole competition scene, the proudness of it being my horse but without the nerves and the upset i went through if riding.

I hope you find someone. It really can be very rewarding. I know most will tell you to stop being a wimp and get out there, but dont underestimate how much fun it is!

Incidently, mine was once injured while out with her and while it was upsetting.. it never crossed my mind to blame her (he went head over heels in the warm up and hurt his knees

That was mine out competing with his rider. He won that British novice that day and i got a plaque and a rosette and everything! Ive still got them all on display

I had a brilliant jumping pony onceand loved going to watch him jump BUT you have to be sure that whoever rides/handles him does things your way. However a brilliant rider they may be it doesn't give them the right to do things to your horse that you don't like.

Im not really but shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have someone who i teach, she is so so scared jumping, so we do flat work, we have been doing poles, which she felt comfortable with, then pod poles, now she is jumping clear round at 2'3 ft and loves it, she really was scared sh@tless but this has taken 3 years, and she is loving it !

He dosent know hes got talent tho!! Im sure hes quite happy doing what you do with him and will be non the wiser if you dont compete him in SJ/X Country!!

I sometimes feel like that with Archie, that i should get someone to SJ him for me as hes by a Grade A out of an Elite SJ mare. I take him loose jumping once a month instead and that does him fine! I might start jumping him again in the summer myself, but im not at all brave when it comes to jumping. Im sure people think im wasting him when all i do is dressage and hacking, when he could easily be a very good showjumper.

I really wouldnt worry about it hun, you are doing just great with him x
