This morning both ponies were out of their stables and wandering around the farm, so obviously I'm worried someones let them out! Farm owner thinks that they both let themselves out (they're in individual stables but don't have kick bolts yet) or that one let himself out and then let the other one out! They're 19mths old and never ever escaped from the stables before, seriously am I being paranoid, what are the chances??!!
They could have only been out literally an hour before we found them as the stable beds were well used.

PS. there are four other horses on the farm in pens that weren't let out but they're in a different part of the farm.

Way to find out. Put a clip (from a lead rope) where you would put a padlock (through the little hole) in the bolts. That way, there is no way they could let themselves out, but a person could. You find them out; they've been let out. You don't; it's a good deterent to both them and other people! Len regularly lets himself out, kick bolts and all, undoes leadropes etc and the clip has been the only thing to keep him in. Make sure everything is locked and secure, but don't worry too much. Sure they are fine. :)

I don't think they would tbh. It's winter, hay prices etc are huge and horses aren't selling. So I see no reason why anyone would want to take them :D As lovely as I'm sure they are. So don't worry :)

I had a little TB that could undo the clip too and still let him self out!

I guess, it's just the chances of both of them escaping together at the same time, I'd understand if one did but two seems a bit suspicious

I would not rule out 1 letting the other out. apparently Captain let himself out , which I know he can do, then went round his last owner's yard letting all the other horses out. They only believed it cos they had CCTV. Needless to say he has a kick bolt with us, he can open the sprung loaded ones as well. :p

Hopefully you will catch the little beggar.

My mum had a horse that could undo the clips as well!
How about other gates onto the yard etc? Maybe put something elsewhere that you'd have to pass to get onto the yard and to the stables, but that the horses won't bother with?

My horse can easily let himself out and can also undo whatever type of leadrope clip thing you may try to use to stop him undoing the bolt. He just unclips that first -and he can do it sooo quickly!!! However, the kick over at least generally stops him escaping, it's just if you forget to put that on. He now has another bolt half way down his door, one of those ones with the metal flap in the inside you have to lift in order to move the bolt.

Funnily though he KNOWS that he needs to get to this bolt to open the door but it is just out of reach. I reckon he'd still be able to open that if he could reach it to be honest.

He's never let his pal out mind alhough he will fiddle with door bolts from the outside - maybe he just doesn't want to let his pal out and wants to gloat instead....!

I certainly wouldn't put it past your youngsters to do this, just because they're young doesn't mean they haven't learnt to do this already - or one of them has anyway.

Also, being that there's a fair bit of snow about - was there any evidence that someone had been about - ie fresher tyre marks, footprints etc?

I bet the horses did it - it is a very annoying habit though!! ha ha
