Seriously.. WWYD?

So glad I read this as makes me feel like I am doing the right thing with our new project pony, who after being an angel for the first 2 days letting us catch and feed him decided to tell us to f off and wont be caught now so he is on his own and I'll keep employing this method till he gives in and the bonus is I am getting super fit !!!
 
If they caught it after the hour I'd say well done. If not, then I wouldn't be very happy, if you start something like that you have to see it through.
 
The previous owners of my old boy never turned him out in company because he was impossible to catch. I used the "don't let him graze or stop" method with him and although the first time it nearly killed me as he was in a 7 acre field, it worked a treat. He will still from time to time, walk away from me but I just flick the rope at him to send him away and he'll be caught straightaway. A bucket of food isn't that attractive when there's plenty of grass! I hope they caught your horse or it defeats the object of the exercise.

Normally if I horse won't be caught as above, keep them moving and they soon get bored at not being able to eat or interact and soon come in.

I suppose it depends how the whip is used. Bobbly didn't say what her OH did with it precisely.

I have a driving whip at the field gate, I use it when Ella is playing games. There is a difference to cracking a whip like a Ring Master and using the extra footage as an arm extension to move a horse along.
 
Suppose iv never really needed to use a whip when you can't catch a horse..

I'm guessing something's happened OP? It really does depend on how it all happened really to say for sure how I'd react.
 
I wouldn't have a problem with someone doing this to catch mine if need be, done it myself ie moving them on and it works.
But I would be bl@@dy furious if I had to waste an hour out of my day to catch someone else's horse. there is nothing more frustrating than a horse that wont catch grrrrr beentheredonethatgrrrr

I would be frantic, angry and on the phone to the police, because no-one except for myself and my parents (who own the field) should be tying to catch them.

If it was someone who I'd given permission to, then they would have been given instructions on how to catch them. Chasing after them with a whip wouldn't be in the instructions, so I would be pretty peeved if they did that.

I'd think they were either an idiot, or that they smelled pretty bad :D

It is my aim that all horses in our field can be caught by anybody, by beckoning to them and calling their name, and that they can will walk with you to the gate or wherever you're taking them, at which point they put their own heads into headcollars held out for them. At all times of year, regardless of grass conditions.

On that basis, if someone told me they couldn't catch one of them and had spent an hour chasing them, I would be inclined to think there must be something seriously dodgy about the person ;)
 
probably laugh a bit. ....apologise for having such a bloody minded rude horse and catch it myself next time?

What would happen if the horse tripped/slipped whilst being chased and was injured? or if said horse suddenly decided it didn't want to be chased and kicked out?

if it was a good friend and i trusted them, of course, it'd be different.

Maybe I'm being over reactive?
 
personally i prefer the 'leave you out on your own method until you work out that you get better things if you come into the stable'
found it frequently works, especially when tided into feed time! horse works out that comming in can be nice and gets a meal as well!
 
Hey Patterdale.. I wasn't actually! Have been reading everybody's replies and nodding along throughout actually. I agree with the 'keep them moving' element. Is it against the law to ask questions on here now??

If the person was an employee of the place and had a job to do then she really is stuck - horse has to come in whether it wants to or not. It's part of her job and no doubt part of what the owner pays to have done.

The chasing until I tell you to stop is a very successful method and used by many professionals.
