Hi,

My horse came in lame and in shock on tuesday night. Shes a tough old boot and seemed to be in serious pain so i called the vet out straight away.

First of all the vert thought she may have broken her pastern or part of the fetlock.
We x-rayed the next morning (after a night in with the biggest support bandage on i had ever seen) and luckily no break!

BUT she had sprained the fetlock, badly bruised the bone and has some damage to the sesamoid ligaments.

IN ten days (boxrest with support bandage on) we will xray again and scan her to see whats going on.

Id be really greatfull to hear of anyones experiences of this injury and what the outcome was?

If shes out of action for a long time i may put her in foal.

thanks lots!

I bought a racehorse who had done his sesamoid ligaments so badly on a hind leg that he pulled them right off the bone. If you knew where to feel, you could find where he had "cemented" them back on with new bone and ossification of the bottom of the ligament. He was perfectly sound in hard work and jumped too. He had about a year's rest and I bought him at the end of the rest period and brought him back into work over three months. I hope that helps.

ahh that really does help thanks. Fingers crossed that she comes right. IF its going to be a long rest period maybe she can have a foal. Trying to look on the bright side!

There isnt much around on the sesamoid ligaments really. Cant wait for my vet visit on monday to change her support bandage... i can grill my vet a bit! lol

I think it depends on the severity of the damage to the ligament. My mare has a 30% core lesion of her straight sesamoidean ligament which ended her career as a dressage horse. However she has since bred a super foal.
Injuries to this area tend to be slow to heal because of the low circulation to the extremities.
Hope you get good news when she is rescanned!

My fathers horse has got a detachment of his off fore sesamoid lig... i have been advised to give him tildren and at least 6 weeks rest in box or small enclosure... hopefully he'll come sound. might be something your vet recommends?
good luck

My previous horse damaged her sesamoid ligaments in her OSF. She was on around 3-4 months box rest, then brought slowly back to work. Her overall recovery took about 7 months, and she returned to full work. She did continue to have ocassional episodes of lamenss where the annular ligament was laying down scar tissue (it was also implicated) - but I had a further three years or so of good work out of her, before she had to be retired.
