A friend has suggested that Loaning winnie out might be a solution, if I did this she wouldn't be able to stay on my yard as I would struggle to give up control, however there is space at my friends yard and Winnie could go there so she can be kept an eye on. Would a potential loanee agree to this?

Why dont you try it and see? Get a loan agreement template from the BHS website. Draw up an advert and see what responses you get. Personally I wouldnt discount someone loaning your horse if they have a yard they like already. Someone I know tried to loan her young sports type out and he was amazing and ready to bring on but was too small for her ... She wouldnt accept any advise about her insisting he stayed on the same yard (and not everyone can afford such expensive yards or want that location) in the end he sat in a field wasted because she's the type (and they drive me insane!) that doesnt sell anything no matter how unsuitable she is for it!

From my one and only experience (as an adult) loaning my horse out I would say keep them close enough to visit bi weekly/ monthly. I put my boy out on loan for a year, it was an amazing loan experience and she was 30-40 minutes away and i visited every month. Sending something half way across the country on loan is asking for trouble. Expecting them to stay on your yard or dictate what yard they go to is pretty pants!

Does your friend know anyone who might be interested? I have known one agreement like this work well, but the loaner already knew the yard where the horse was to be kept (her friend had her horse there). I think if you are just advertising it might well put people off, though I suppose its always worth a try.

You as the owner can call the shots, and should do so.

If you nominate another yard for the horse to be kept at, then that is that!! If the potential loaner doesn't like the situation then they don't take up the loan in the first place!

It would certainly give you peace of mind if you knew that someone was keeping an eye on your horse for sure.

If you need a specimen loan agreement, then I'm quite happy for you to have a copy of the one I used when my boy went on loan a few years back. I can let you have it if you PM me. I used the one on the BHS website and cobbled it around for my own situation.

At the end of the day you can ask for many references and I'D ect but it's an exercise of trust. 2 of mine are on loan 3 hours away from me. It was a huge gamble but I just "knew" when I spoke to the family that they were right for my boys. They've been away 6 months I've seen them in the flesh once and get updates via fb every other week.
