Hi,

this is just a hypothetical question at the moment!!!!

My dream is to set up a small stud and breed one particular rare breed (do not want to go into which one right now, sorry, but the breed is known to do well in dressage and is a magnificent general riding horse as well) but has anybody done this and what was your experience? Do you make a good living out of it or do you have to have a normal job as well?

Thanks very much in advance!

The yard I'm at is also a stud, they breed sports horses which sell for quite a bit, well thousands as just foals. They have both brood mares and stallions. Depends on how big your operation is, if you're talking just half dozen mares then you have to do it as a hobby and yeah you get some money out of it. To live on, you'd have to have quite a lot of mares and good stallions, and they dont come cheap.

Research is vital, is there a big enough market for what you want to breed, who is already breeding them, and what are they currently selling for etc. x
