I promise you I don't work for them, but am amazed that my serial crib biter has totally stopped the habit within 2 days of being on this product.
He used to crib in the field, stable, even on his reins given half the chance, but as we bought him with full knowledge of the crib biting, put it down to a long term habit and didn't expect to be able to do anything about it.
He is a much happier horse too - no longer grumpy when I tighten the girth and a lot more forward going and cheerful.
Can't guarantee it will work as well for anyone else, but certainly sorted out my chap so over the moon!

I'm really glad its worked for you, but i'm afraid it only works on some :-( , if its worked with yours a cheeper alternative is carbonated soda i thinks its half a tea spoon. It will have the same effect.
 
Do you know why it works? Mine cribs furiously, especially immediately after eating but at other times too. I had her scoped for Ulcers a couple of weeks ago and none were found, so not sure if the cribbing is related.

My vet started talking about a new piece of evidence with regard to cribbing opening up the stomach (I think he was saying that the air intake makes the food pass through the stomach faster) and that a high fat diet can slow this down? I may not have understood him correctly, but he was basically suggesting that a high oil diet could reduce the cribbing? Bit vague, I will have to research it a bit more!
 
Thanks for the advice 'Sonic' - I may try that as the Settlex is £30 for 30 days. Will experiment once used up......!

'Now loves mares' - I assume it works for my lad as it acts like a human ant-acid eg rennies. If I remember rightly from the feedmark info 'Settlex' reduces/neutralises excess acid in the stomach. As I understand it horses crib for 2 reasons, either through boredom or to relieve discomfort from this excess acid, with my lad obviously falling into this category hence the supplement working.
I wanted my vet to scope my chap too for ulcers, but was reluctant to do so as he was showing no outward signs eg weight loss, poor coat, colicky, but I was convinced he was not comfortable as was increasingly grumpy to saddle and reluctant to go forward.
I have not heard of the high fat diet - but I know high grain diets can increase the urge to crib....
 
It is thought that the use of antacids can actually cause a rebound acidity. They help temporarily but then the stomachs inbuilt acidity regulator releases more acid because of the antacid.

Cribbing is not caused by boredom. It is excess acid that has nothing to digest and/or ulcers.
 
I thought cribbing was termed a 'stereotypie', such as weaving, which can be caused by excessive stabling and incorrect diet etc, so not always connected to acid.......?
 
Yeah, think it just works for some. I had a cribber a few years ago and put her on Settlex, didnt work.

teddyt - its not proven that its only caused by excess acid. There is proof Ive read that says boredom / bad diet etc. can cause it too.

I was lead to beleive through all the reports and research, they still arn't sure. Different horses crib for diffrent reasons. Ie no mirical cure. I've tried just about everything with my old gelding.

Sidney if you think he's not right, I can not stress how much to get him checked out. My vets when my boy was really really bad, ie turned into a hat rack, crap coat, no life, no viruse, still did not diagnos ulcers, we went through two years of hell, ie RSPCA at the door style. And then a year latter all this reseach on ulcers relating cribing came out and it was like reading a list of symtoms. I soon changed vets

My boy made a full recovery but i hate to think of the time we wasted.

Thanks for your concern re ulcers. I have had my vet out to look at him for ulcers but he was reluctant to scope as the horse was not showing any classic ulcer symptons - glossy coat, holding weight and never colicked.
The issues I was concerned about was his grumpiness and resistance to going forward, which at the moment, have been alleviated......
