Severe Allergic reaction

My native spotted pony had a severe allergic reaction this Spring and I am wondering if it could be the use of Skin so Soft or Effol Fly Gel? Has anyone else had any problems using either of these products. His body was covered in hives and welts and his neck has wrinkles. Had to have steroids and anti inflammatories etc. Hives now gone but neck still has wrinkles
 
A horse on our yard last year had this reaction to effol fly spray. It was terrible she was washed down with poison(to humans anyway) to reduce the hives. She is now fully recovered, ironically my boy was having same fly spray and didnt react. Very bizzarre. We rang up and informed them.
 
Hi, yes, I am becoming convinced that either the SSS or Effol Fly gel has something to do with the wrinkles although the lump biopsies seemed to point to insect or parasite hypersensitivity causing the hives. I used SSS last year with no problems. Vet has not seen wrinkled neck like this before. Hopefully it will go in time!
 
some fly repellants are very strong. Can you try and find out the ingredients to see if they contain known possible allergens?
 
The Effol Fly Gel does not actually state what is in it! I know there is Citronella. I looked on the Effol Web site and it stated that the ingredients in their fly spray and gel are based on Icaridine. This means nothing to me and when I tried to research Icaridine I got a lot of chemical speak, which was not helpful. I used SSS last year with no problem but that doesn't mean to say that it was not that product. It's left me with a big vet bill so I will be more careful from now on. He was clipped out so these may have been more sensitive on his skin.:confused:
 
Sounds VERY much like when I bought a different (cheaper) flyspray, slapped it on with my usual enthusiasm and left my poor mare with a chemical burn - once the lumps and wrinkles died down, all the hair fell out. Until I twigged what was going on her skin felt like it was on fire. It took a couple of days of twice daily gently baths to take the heat out of her. Yes, it was citronella.
 
Yep, sounds similar.
He came in one evening with a very hot, burning neck and in great distress. Had to get vet out. Not using Effol any more just my home made spray and fly rug. He now fine except for a few remaining wrinkles and his coat is ok too, thank goodness. Thanks for response.
