So if I’m honest showing bores the tits off me. However I am ridiculously proud of my beautiful old boy Ollie and would love to just do one qualifier on him (we nearly lost him this last year). However being realistic I am lazy and like to hog him so I don’t need to plait for dressage. I also hate double bridles and think everyone should ride in a snaffle but just my thoughts. I do have a Stamford Jeffries wh saddle that I bought secretly as it’s been a wish for a couple of years but can I compete in a snaffle? And although he’s a hefty chap he’s more hunter I’d say than maxi cob can I hog him - I kind of know the answer to this but just incase I could get away with not plaiting. He’s also the type of horse that you don’t notice until he’s under saddle and then he blows your socks off because it’s like seeing a bulldozer doing shoulder in, so trotting up tips would be good. Funnily enough I’ve helped a couple of proper show people over the years but I don’t want to tell anyone as I don’t want the pressure I just want to show people my lovely horse. Hence asking you folks. Basically do I need a double and to plait for a SfAS qualifier? Thanks

If he is a hunter type he will need to be shown plaited. Also, it is correct to show in a pelham (just ride off the snaffle rein and hold the curb) I’ve done a SFAS qualifier before and standard was high so I would try and stick with these things if you can. As for trotting up in hand in the veteran class they will mostly be looking for a supple horse and freedom of movement not necessarily anything extravagant so I wouldn’t worry too much - a good trot up is achieved by practise. Good luck 😃

Thank you, god I hate plaiting 🤣. Oh I didn’t realise Pelhams were the done thing I thought it was a Pelham if you didn’t want the two bits. I must have a Pelham I think it’s a rugby Pelham. I’m now wondering if I hate running up and practise as much as plaiting .. tricky one 🤣. So show wise is it the usual figure of 8 to show trot/canter and then a gallop? I probably should do a practise run that’s sounds sensible 🤣.

The veteran is open so not restricted to amateurs and the majority will be turned out very correctly. That said the judges are all of the type to recognise a good horse and I can say that as we won one of the qualifiers the first year although it was restricted to amateurs that time around. Definitely go for it and enjoy. The working hunter saddle will be fine. I can’t remember now, but I don’t think it has a set show though some of the classes do. My individual show is walk away into trot, trot diagonal and into canter then change canter lead across the next diagonal and then extend down the far side, nice showy trot and halt. You don’t extend in most veteran classes and I can’t remember if you do in this one or not.

Sometimes they don’t ask for a gallop in veteran classes so just check the individual rules for that class. Yes I don’t see many double bridles tbh but nearly everything is wearing a pelham unless it’s a novice class and then snaffles are acceptable too.

Definitely check the rules re the extension as I know in some Veteran classes it is 'now allowed' (personally I think this is ridiculous but hey-ho!)
If your horse goes best in a snaffle I would leave that in, if you're going to use a Pelham a Show Pelham is preferable to a Rugby.

Do you have a pic of him? A lot of Show Cobs are more light of bone than you would imagine so there's a chance you could get away with hogging.
