I know this may seem a melodramatic title but I am so upset. My boy has mites and has suddenly scratched himself red raw and bleeding and the vet has just taken all his 8 year old, beautifully grown and stunningly handsome feathers off to inject him. So, my question is.......and be honest: How long til he gets his feathers back? It is what he wins the show's with.

Normally takes our mare a good year for half feathers .I clip her for her comfort he will probably love you more for being comfortable .

Kick your vet and get some frontline and then use pig oil and sulphur - unless the sores were infected no need to clip the feather out. My vet has looked after heavies for years and said clipping is only required if infected and does not remove the mites.

Now to the good news - you will have full feather again in 6 - 8 months and keep that vet away in future.

apparently he was infested so he has just been injected and creamed up proper styley cos he has not let anyone go near his legs for 3 weeks. the only up side of this is due to such heavy sedation (we have tried to sedate before once ourselves and once via iv - he would rather fall on his knees than give in) he is now being clipped all over for the first time ever by the lovely girls at the yard who are about to receive lots of wine and thanks from me and my ex......BUT he has also lost a shoe today, it never rains it just pours as they say!

It will come good again - don't worry

If you do hog, bear in mind that it will take approx two years for the mane to fully regrow again if you want it to - so not a short term decision

We clipped our lads off today, the vet came out and said it was up to us, but easier to treat without feathers. We are happy hackers and do very little showing, and Echos comfort was priority so off it all came! Poor lad, he is 12 and I don't think has ever had them off! He panicked a bit, couldn't understand the sensation of no hair, but got over it pretty quick.

Just to show you how much he had!

It is such a shame, when you have worked so hard for so long to keep them and they look so good with their feathers ..... and here I am a horse owner who always clips them off

It is a huge shock to see their legs when clipped out. Cairo's legs look so white and skinny - well they do to us. He looks a bit odd at the moment - full front and clipped hinds - two years ago he was the other way round.

We had to clip out as he required x-rays and there was just too much hair in the way.

Good thing is that when full clipped, I can confirm no scabs whatsoever - so the P&S does work.

Start with the P&S now and hopefully the mites won't come back - if you want the longest PM on mites and preventions and keeping feather in show condition, PM me and I'll send you it.

I bet he looks lovely!! (That's coming from a non hairy lover!)

Best for him to get rid of his bugs and get some air to his legs!
