Wondering whether any of you have good ideas for providing shade at competitions? I don't have the budget for a proper awning at the moment, so thought you guys might have some DIY options. I'd rather not drill holes in the box. I have a 3.5t. Thanks in advance.

I park up noting where the sun is. My box stays quite cool in relation to outside, providing I park side on to the sun.
On Sunday, this meant parking nose on facing the sun 1st thing, so by lunchtime the sun was beating down on the drivers side, which meant the ramp side (my ramp is on kerb side) was in full shade.
It all helps.

like TFF our lorry stays pretty cool inside. I get all windows open as soon as we arrive and then if its really hot pony spends his 'down time' on the lorry with the ramp down, windows open and grooms door open so there is a decent breeze (OH is talking about putting a couple of fans in too.). Pony is only 12.2hh and 2yrs old so has plenty of room in our box (7.5t set up for 2 horses) with the partition pulled back and the gates closed.

We do have an awning on ours. OH found it cheap second hand as it had slight damage. He's repaired it and fitted it, but to be honest its a real faff to get it out and in so we only really use it at home when we have BBQs etc.

Coolest place for mine is in the lorry, even on the hottest days. It seems to be fairly well insulated and has big skylights as well as windows for ventilation. I wouldn't want a potentially flapping and blowing away awning or similar. Too much to go wrong.

I think the new mare will stand on the lorry, but the one in my avatar will most categorically not! I usually try to get near trees, but there's a few comps with no natural shade where you park, so I will try to work out where the sun will come from, thanks for the tip.

OH would probably be up to fitting an awning himself, but still a bit out of budget at the moment.

Maybe I should get them those little umbrella hats :p

I suppose you could erect a pop up gazebo and tie it to the lorry.
But you would want a pretty unflappable horse and I’m not convinced I’d want to do it.

I used to have a trailer that came with an awning, I think I only put it up once as it was such a faff. I wouldn't have trusted my horse under it either, I'm not keen tying them up to the side of a lorry I'd rather they be onboard.
