Is anyone able to enlighten me on the shades of bay and Chestnut and hoe they are passed down to offspring?

My mare is bright bay, she is in foal to a liver chestnut stallion.

I know she can produce chestnut, as she was out of a chestnut mare, not sure which shade.

The stallion was by another liver chestnut stallion.

so foal has a 50/50 chance of being chestnut or bay /(black a very remore possiblility)

but any predictions on the shade?

(I'm keeping everything crossed for liver chestnut!)

It could be while before you find out - my bay mare went to a dark bay stallion. The foal came out bright ginger with cream legs. First coat change he went a gorgeous liver. Next coat change darkish chestnut. Now in his teens, he is ginger in Summer and almost liver in Winter. Go figure!

I put my bright bay mare to a chestnut with flaxen mane & tail, foal started life bright by but changed to a dark bay after about 6 months!

Very good question, answer being no-one knows I'm afraid. Baisicly if you breed liver to liver / dark bay to dark bay then you are far more likely to end up with a liver/dark bay baby than if you breed ginger to ginger / bright bay to bright bay. However the exact inheritances are not known by a long chalk and between 'liver' (dark all over) 'sooty' (black dapples) and 'flaxen' (blonde manes, possibly a recessive) then it is a guess to say the least what the result will be.
