Shagya Arab pics for a change

I love arabs (onto number 3 now - and all related!) and CB's.
But please excuse my ignorance, what is a Shagya? If it's 90% arab, what is the other 10%?
By the way, your arab is absolutley gorgeous.

I cannot tell you the other 10% as the Shagya was the result of several failed attempts to breed a Cavalry Horse for the Hapsburgs. Originally pure bred desert Arabs were crossed with Spanish, Hungarian and Thoroughbreds.

The foundation stud Babolna, Hungary, which is were we purchased our brood mares, was established in 1789, it was an Imperial Stud.

It was the importation of a stallion from Syria, called Shagya, in 1836 which gave us the breed we know today. He was both tall 15.2 1/2hh and substantial Shagya's should have at least 7.5" of bone.

The Imperial Cavalry of the Hapsburgs were always mounted on Shagya Arabs.

Today if you find Ramiro in a warmblood pedigree you will also find Ramzes an Anglo-Shagya Arab.

Milton's dam Aston Anwer was a great grandaughter of BASA, (Shagya XII-3) who we think is the only Shagya stallion to have stood in the UK. He was imported from Hungary and sold to Henry Wynmalen, who was given a Gold Medal by BHS in 1961, largely for his outstanding contribution to dressage in the UK - usually riding BASA.

You could ask some more questions on the Shagya World Website, which is in English and has a forum.
