My horse will get quite antsy around his head and shakes it quite violently when wound up (which is easily done)
He will sometimes do the classic vertical toss but what worries me more is the “wet dog” shake. Sometimes he will follow through with the whole body which reminds me of being a tiny child at risk of being shaken off a sweaty pony. It’s not a horse thing!
Not done it all winter but started this weekend again a few times. He’s always been a snorty type and on a bad day he will snort and shake a lot.
Nose or face nets make him worse, as does anything on his face. He weirdly prefers flies to fly masks.
Is this just another form of proper head shaking? 😫
Vets out tomrrow to look at the wither sore so will be asking her about this aswell but it’s not like head shaking I’m familiar with.
It’s occurred to me today that our old horse did this and I remember saying the same thing years ago about him. It started when we moved here, he also dog shook instead of vertically.
Something to do with the area?
Both have/had regular dentals and nicely fitting bridles/bits but did it what ever was on their head.

Maybe pollen yes. I tried to take notice of where he does it (along side which crop types, weather etc) there seems little rhyme or reason to it though!
BB if I tried to make him stand still for 5 minutes out hacking when he’s in that mood I’d end up on my bum! 🙄

We used to be like that. In more occasions than not it was easier to get off and get back on. Give him his 5 minutes and breathe. Again that all depends on where you are and if there is something to get back on with. He is either chilling or getting old 😂 If he does get spooked or something is ahead he literally stops, I can feel his heartbeat through my legs , I can actually hear it if its not windy then a little pat and a treat usually works lol
