Can you do both?? Mine were freezemarked but that was before microchipping became really widely used. Think with next horse will have both done if it is possible . . .

No, the freezemark does not present a significant problem in showing in my opinion -although it was disappointing at the Royal Show last year to see how few horses had them (actually the only one I saw was on our pony I think.)

They are no more unsightly than a brand on warmbloods - and everybody accepts those without question.

Freezemark on the shoulder every time as the mark is visible when being ridden. A freezemark can be read by anyone so it is easy to identify the horse. There are about 6 different Microchipping systems and the scanners of one system does not read all the others which is a real problem.

If you aren't bothered by the appearence then i'd go for freezemark, you'd hope it would act as a bit of a deterrent as well as being easy for someone to spot if a horse was stolen.

Freezemark in an obvious place - given reaon for having it done is in case of theft its an easy mark to describe and even people who have no expertise in horses could spot a freezemark and number

Mine are microchipped, one is freezemarked as well and the others are booked in to be freezemarked in a couple of weeks. They are being done on the shoulder so the marks will be visible at all times, as Peter has said - the scanners don't pick up all chips and I have never seen anyone with a scanner at any of the auctions I have been to.

I have a freezemark on my boy's shoulder. I did this so it was visible with the saddle on. I see no point in marking where it can't be easily seen. It should make no difference to a show pony's chances in the ring.

If you are serious about showing - mark under the saddle NOT the shoulder- my lovely cob has his on the shoulder -(previous owner

) and it really looks wrong in the ring

). My other cob is marked under the saddle and competed county & HOYS with no comments on the mark

. BTW freezemark only do 3 numbers/letters so more discreet.

I have had both done but if I could only have one, it would be the freezemark. Freezemark is a visible deterrant.

I do show Chancer, so his mark is under the saddle and any judge who puts down a freezemarked horse should be banned from judging. I have never had any judge comment on his mark.

freezemark. All 5 of my show horses/ponies are freezemarked. Get it done under the saddle and it wont affect you in the ring.

have decided to get her freezemarked under her saddle area as she is jet black and the white of the marking would be a bit lary in the ring i feel. Thanks for your help.
