I have been thinking about getting my ex racer freeze marked, he is micro-chipped but I think in the event of him ever getting stolen and ending up at auction :(, a visual marking like a freeze mark would make him much easier to find... also if I do get him FM do I have it put on his shoulder or his back? also I would like the possibility of showing him in hand in the future so would he get knocked down for having a FM??

After just having my horse go missing/stolen just over 4 weeks ago.If I was you I would get your horse freezemarked. My boy is microchipped, but he is still missing.
If I get my boy back he will be done thats for certain!

Just had Shy done, and soooo happy with the result, and the peace of mind it's given me. Used Farmkey, excellent - look at their website for the info. :)

I got my mare done just over a year ago, just behind saddle as that's where she had a black bit :) i like it there because people can also see it when I'm out riding. People often stop and ask to pat her etc so it's nice to Know it's visible at all times x

sorry to hear you have not found him yet, hope he is found soon. Thoughts are with you... *hugs* x

I have been thinking about this for H for a while now as I understand it is the biggest deterrent to theft and, of course the best help to reunite horse and owner should the worst happen.

Most at our yard are marked, but I was thinking of getting a few together as I believe it is a bit cheaper that way?

Do it, do it yesterday. It will make it less likely they are stolen at all, much easier to trace and prove ownership, and lastly will mean if they are stolen you wont be wracked with the guilt of knowing you could have done it but didnt.

Honestly, the moment its done you realise how relieved you are to get it done. And you wont even notice it after a few weeks, it becomes part of them!

Yes definately get it done. I used Farmkey (the lady was very good) and had a personalised mark at the base of his mane. I think it looks pretty good now it has grown over with white hair.

Shy couldn't have his shoulder done, as not enough black - that was my first choice at the time. He's had it done just behind the saddle, and now I think it's perfect.

Tbh totally honest, I discussed it with the lady from farmkey on site, as I had no idea and went from there. Really very helpful. You can just have a horseshoe if you prefer, which indicates horse is microchipped, but I wanted the full monty.

I am so very glad it is done, especially with Appleby and all that malarky. I've just had Shy clipped too as an extra deterrant (sp). If you listen to Tinseltoe's heartbreak over the loss of her beloved cob, there is no way I would have not gone for it.

Yes,Yes,Yes - definitely!
Ours are freezemarked and it's so reassuring to know that you've done all you can to prevent them being taken. There have been lots of cases where horses have been stolen from a field and the only ones that remained were freezemarked, and other cases where a bunch of horses have been taken and the ones with freezemarks were abandoned somewhere because it's so much hassle to have to try and hide a freezemark.
I'd personally get it done on the shoulder because that way it's visible when a horse is being ridden, so it can't be hidden by the saddle if the horse was to go through sales etc.
Well worth doing imo and better than microchipping as the thief will see a freezemark before he takes the horse, rather than discovering a microchip once he already has it in his possession. Microchips also can't be spotted in for sale ads etc, whereas a freezemark can - plus you hear all those horror stories about microchips being cut out.

Tinseltoes - I'm so sorry to hear about your horse, I hope you find him soon x

Without doubt get your horse freezemarked as anyone can read a freezemark. Get it done on a part of your horse where the freezemark is visible when being ridden. Also ensure that your horses record on www.nedonline.co.uk is ammended to include your horses freezemark and also microchip number. One other piece of advice is have dog tags made up for your horses saddle, bridle and halter with both your name and contact telephone number(s) and also that of your vets just in case you get seperated when being ridding out. Also ensure all your tack is tack marked with your post code.

Got the dog tags already, I don`t want to get the tack marked in case I ever want to sell it.

That's what I wondered too AAR: I hope to be purchasing a Friesian for myself in the years to come, and while I wouldn't let the aesthetics or showing marking affect my decision to keep the horse safe, I do still wonder about it!

That is the dilemma I am facing at the mo... hopefully someone will be able to tell us... watch this space... if not I will have to open another thread...

I'm sure people in other threads have said it doesn't affect showing. But surely, if you're really worried about theft, detering thieves is far more important than the odd rossette?

I wanted to know all the facts before I made a decision... I do not want to get him FM to then be told I can`t show him now.

Yes, do it!

Had mine done 2 years ago, only waited that long as I wanted a period when he was off work for a couple of weeks as he was done under the saddle. We have ELS1D as his show name is El Sid :)

My boy is dark bay with no white markings, so I knew that he wouldn't be easily recognised if stolen. Everyone always comments about the mark, but unfortunately not many on my yard have theirs' done :( I honestly think everyone should, just for peace of mind.

I used Freezemark who were fab!
