Cobs mane is really thick especially near the top of her neck, its horrendous like a double mane and worse now its been (attempted) solo raked..........she hates me touching it, wont let me plait it and as soon as i get 2 hands near it she goes mad and tries to barge out the way/rear and it just becomes dangerous. Even after sedalin shes a nightmare!! never ever attempted to use a pulling comb shes just ultra sensitive about me touching it, she will let me comb it with one hand!!
Planning on showing next year and a few dressage tests, but this mane is like a bog brush, wont stay over on the right side and she wont let me plait it over.
So, can she pull off a hog?! shes still growing/maturing , 15hh now but will probably mature to around 15.2hh.
I would leave her mane to grow but her feather is non-existent and looks wispy and scruffy so these get trimmed.
Theres a bit of local dressage w&t tests over winter one per month that i would like to do and would normally plait but seeing as thats a nono am thinking of a hog!.
She will be living out with a rug and neck cover on this winter (to keep her clean) so if i hog the mane and leave the forelock will i have to clip the legs off or are they okay scissored till spring? ;) am thinking mud fever!! also would she looked daft hairy with bib/ trace clip and hogged mane? do they need a full clip to pull off a hog in winter??
Hogging tips/ideas please!!
The mane in question!

(PS tried to edit title but wouldn't let me! should be: should i hog!!)

I'd hog her too. I agree with miss_c, all cobs should be hogged in my world! Is she going to let you hog her though? We don't want you getting squished in the process!

If its so bad then hog, she looks like she will take it. I would keep the legs tidy but wouldnt clip close to the leg as if shes living out she will need protection from the elements of winter. Just keep the legs tidy using a mane comb and scissors, a bit like when Hairdressers trim our hair. I think she would look fine with a trace clip and hog. Horse on our yard has this. Again, if shes living out then I would leave some of her coat on to keep her warm, especially if the winter is going to be as bad as predicted.

I'd say your cob would be nice hogged.
Re: hog and clip, once it's practical I wouldn't be too concerned about the over all look. However if you are wanting to keep a balanced over all look, perhaps a blanket clip, albeit a bit less hair than a bib or trace, but a nice compromise to a full or hunter?

I would hog her, i think she would look lovely with a hogged mane, trimmed tail, trimmed feathers and a tidy clip. Would be like a whole new her!

I would also take off the forelock as will look much smarter in the dressage tests! but i would pull back her forelock and see if her face shape suits it as not all horses hogged do!

Hog hog hog!!!!!! All off, including the forelock. One thing though, I wouldn't do a blanket clip as it can make heavier horses look on the forehand even when they're not, a high chaser is more flattering if you dont want to take it all off. That was a top tip from H&H and very true with my HW cob.

We want after pics!
