There's a showing show end of next month with a few classes I could take my boy in for his first time, mixture of both just unaffiliated youngstock classes and a few equifest qualifier ones.

Now I wasn't going to show him this year, as his tail and mane got chewed out before winter by another colt just after I got him. His mane is longer on both sides now rather than short sticky up bits, but nowhere near as long as it should be - it's about a foot long I'd guess both sides. His tail is down to the top of his hocks now. Feather etc is fine along with the rest of his condition [possibly a little too well]. Manners wise he absolutely perfect and he won't be a bother I shouldn't think anyway.

Now, I wasn't going to take him out till he looked spot on right [which if he had the mane and tail he would right now!]....but I'm starting to think, actually, why not take him out to local ones anyway for the experience and a day out?

I'm not bothered about placing, I never am nor am competitive anyway, so I'm thinking, just take him anyway, it's all good in the long run? At least next year, he'll then be used to shows somewhat?

If its for education, then what is stopping you?
Cosmetic reasons aside, there is nothing is there?

edited to add: I would not do more than 2 classes tho - and if you are thinking your animal is good enough for affiliated classes for next year - then this time stick to the non-aff ones, just my opinion tho.
 
Very true!

If he gets laughed at for his stump, I shall stick up for him :p He kinda suits it....little Indian pony lol. I can't imagine him with a tail any more lol.
 
Take him, not a showing person so its easy for me to say placings don't matter but reckon its a bonus you can get the experience without any pressure.

I took Herbs to the new forest show with only half a mane :o He rubbed it out after I had entered :( and I wasn't going to loose the entry fee.
 
Nah agreed! I'd only want to do one class with him, maybe 2 if the first class doesn't go so well ;)
There's coloured in-hand [BSPA] or just a general youngstock under 3 class [he's 2].

If you've got the time, inclination and aren't bothered about placings, I'd take him and let him soak up the experience... It's all education that you might have difficulty replicating 'at home'... :)

Yeah go for it, great to kick start his showing career education really :)
Annoying when they get nibbled by other young ones, Nell is the same, she had one very long section of mane but it was silly to keep as the rest was chewed off it so I had to chop it!
 
Tip from a well known showing judge, 'I always tell my horses they're beautiful'. Its a self fulfilling prophecy, ignore his lack of tail on the day and tell him he's the most handsome horse ever and he will be.

He'll always be beautiful to me, so no hardship telling him that for me ;) :p

Take him!! I have a really, REALLY ugly pony whom I am taking to some local shows this year for the experience and to get him used to being out and about with other horses. Mine has terrible conformation, so will get nowhere, even at local level, but we'll have a nice day out all the same!
