I have been thinking of getting another dog for a while and have been surfing the Battersea dogs home webbie and I saw......

An 8 weeks staffie pup who had been in the centre since he was 5 weeks, presumably dumped. They have loads of staffies in there and it wasn't a breed I really wanted but what a bl@@dy start in life
and he was very cute

My friends Staffie is lovely - good with other people, dogs and kids - does get in the odd scrap over Sweep

- she thinks he is her 'friend' and doesn't like other dogs talking to him.......

Do it do it do it!!

Or, if you dont, check out many tears rescue, they have loads of sad little puppies on there. Why oh why are people breeding without homes lined up for their babies?!?!

All this chat of rescues persuaded me to trawl the GSD rescue sites - I don't know whether to be sad or angry!!!

Go for it. I would have a load more if we had more room, more time, and if my mother wouldn't kill me...

Some of the stories on the GSD rescue sites are heart breaking aren't they. Naively I really had no idea of the scale of dogs in rescue until I was helping to find a home for Saffi. That is why I volunteered as a home checker/dog assessor, at least I feel I am doing my little bit to help.

Good for you!

There was a tight-coated sable on there a while ago called Tyke or Tyson or Tyler or something, he is not on anymore so I presume he got a home, he was just stunning, but I think my request that he be popped in a jiffy bag and sent to Northern Ireland would have met with a 'no'

I see they don't generally home to people who will be keeping the dog living outside - don't know if I agree with that, all of ours have lived outside and it didn't do them any harm!
What is the rationale behind this, do you know?

They do have a thing about dogs living outside, they were a bit worried about one family I checked because they had mentioned they had a kennel and run for when they weren't about. I think it is because they obviously have to be so careful people don't take dogs as guard dogs. After I had visited family in question and sussed them out, and passed on my views to GSD Rescue they approved them to have a dog, so it isn't written in stone. I have 2 living in and 1 living outside, because she really doesn't like being in, i sometimes feel guilty about her but she is happy as larry out there. Of course if a dog has been a house pet it maybe wouldn't be right to rehome them to live outside, but then again if they are going to be stuck in rescue kennels what is the difference

Although I have to say a lot of them seem to be in foster homes rather than kennels.

OK, that sounds sensible, thanks for explaining.

Our lot have always been outdoorsy, the current pair do come in occassionally (Bella when she was super-hyper, to shut her up

and B when he was recovering from his op) but I honestly think they seem happier out.

As someone who has staffies - please carry on looking at the rescues (staffy welfare lists all their subsets throughout the UK) or try Rescueremedies - based in Surrey - they are not a specialist staffie home but have ended up with a lot in their rescues. They are a lovely rescue and very terrier focused! There are a lot of young staffies in rescue ( I bought 2 on the PTS list down from yorkshire - 1 was only 10 months old, the other no more than 18 months). Good rescues (like the ones i mentioned) put a lot in assessing their dogs and both my staffies came through staffie rescue - and both are are excelent yard dogs although useless as guard dogs - they make EVERYONE welcome! pm me if you want info or an intro - I help out sometimes with my local staffie rescue (guildford) - and finally - pups - rescues dont tend to advertise them - guildford rehomed all their 6 puppies recently that were donated - and none were put on the website.
