Hello!

This is a shamelessly shallow thread from someone who works full time and always looks a total state!

How do you mange with mucking out before work, or riding every evening, and still managing to look presentable?

With the nicer weather I've been trying to ride everyday, but terrible hat hair means I then have to wash my hair every day, plus blow drying, plus straightening. My hair is not happy! Is this quite standard?

Has anyone got any tips? Is it just me? Some people at my yard constantly look like they have strolled off the pages of a Derby House catalogue. How do they do it?!

Thanks!

No idea how they do it, I certainly can't manage it! I favour the 'Dragged through a Hedge Backwards' look, it's very fashionable right now you know.

Dont look to me for advise. this morning i went to office with horse slobber in hair(baby loves playing with hair when fastening rug) left straw in loo and had a slobber stain on bum of trousers lol i love being me amongst the perfect made up collegues :)

Pah hahahahaha! No idea... I look like a scarecrow and I nearly always forget to wipe my makeup off...

I'm offensive looking when I'm down the yard. Don't really care... Never see anyone anyone anyway.

At least I wear appropriate clothes... Some people come down in their pyjamas and ugg boots...

I usually wear my hair in a bun most of the time these days, keeps it out of the way so it doesn't attract hay and also looks neat at work. If I have hat hair I can just wash my fringe in the sink as the rest of its tucked away :)

This morning someone was complaining about straw in the kitchen and all the heads in the open plan office slowly swivelled towards me. So embarrassing! Probably what prompted this!

dry shampoo .. you can buy it at Tesco's and the like (not sure if horse DNA is included)! Wonderful for you hair, cleans without washing and you can even keep it in your car!

mucking out before work, riding every evening, cleaning tack, grooming horse etc

ive found they dont do these things^..... normaly turn up twice a week, get some tack, place on horse, ride horse, take off tack, put away and spend the next hour talking without once looking at their horse again!

if you want to look like you model horse clothing either act like this, or dont bother with horses!

i have found a good ventilated hat helps amazingly!!!! (less sweat)

and give your hair a really good condition with somehing like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41N8WGe7lhL._SY300_.jpg

and then apply some of this - 2 drops does per wash...lasts forever! http://jasminewayblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/loreal_2.jpg

beautiful hair and easier to manage! :D

I'm lucky in that I get time to come back and wash hair before work... but I have to say generally my turnout standards have really slipped since getting horses.

Batiste dry shampoo is my saviour! It corrects a multitude of sins and assists with the "dragged thru a hedge backwards" / "birds nest hair" look my unruly tresses seem to resemble.

I have naturally wavy-curly hair and I tend to get away washing it every 2-3 days - but I do put it up in a bun/top knot at the yard to keep it out of the way. I dry shampoo on the second day to keep it. I've given up straightening as it killed my hair and now just let it do it's thing - oddly enough, despite still wanting straight hair I've received loads of compliments on my au natural hair.

To try and keep my hands & nails looking presentable I wear gloves whilst mucking out and doing the chores as much as possible. Nails are always painted to hide horse s*** and use lots of hand cream.

Perfume is my best friend too!

In all honesty, I only manage to look presentable at work as I go home after doing the horses first thing & I shower, full face of make up and hair styled before leaving for work ... otherwise, I'd be guilty of straw in the office kitchen too! :D

I've always wondered this out hunting. I literally only just have to step out the box to look a state yet there are some immaculately turned out ladies that still look pristine after a full day and with a full face of makeup. I secretly think that instead of my customary cigarettes, chocolate and hip flask, their pockets contain mirrors, baby wipes and concealor.

Constantly being got at by daughter for my glamorous(not!)attire. My excuse is that I've lost weight since getting Oakley and my "nice" clothes don't fit, can't afford to buy more because I have a horse! The last time I put a skirt on it ended up around my knees.
I secretly enjoy slobbing around in jeans and jods and picking hay out of my hair, I've wanted to have the excuse for thirty odd years so I'm making the most of it now.:D:D:D

I could never ride before work, my hat make my hair stink, so I always ride after work! but if you do, get a good dry hair shampoo! rock the scruffy hair look, its cool at the moment!

take some baby wipes and clean your face and do your make up after you've ridden?

have a change of clothes so your work clothes don't stink or horse or get covered in hay/mud etc!

I also can't live without Batiste!

However I really am a scabby student, I use in to prolong the periods between washing my hair so that my red hair dye lasts longer thereby saving me the cost (and mainly effort!!) of re-dyeing it!

Being a poor (and lazy) student makes you pick up some terrible habits :o

I was in a meeting with my Deputy and Head when the Deputy started absent mindlessly picking bits of straw off my cardigan. :o Then she noticed the dog hair on my trousers :o :o

Because I have time currently,I'm straightening my very curly hair daily. I don't want to wash it or I'll have to start from scratch: how does this dry shampoo work?

It's easy, it's just like deodorant for your hair as it's an aerosol! :D

Here are the instructions on the bottle:

Shake vigorously (oo er) before use
Keep nozzle 30cm from hair
Spray into roots, massage throughout hair with fingertips. (I just blast it all over my head and rub it!)
Brush.

That's it, takes me about 30 seconds :D

Dr shampoo is, I agree, a god send :D I stopped using it ages ago when I forgot to rub it in properly and someone asked why I had white hair.... but just got some more now they have it for brunettes etc. Awesome stuff!!!

What is this extrodinary oil someone posted about?!?

It wasn't until I was half way though a class the other day when I noticed a loooong, single strand of hay poking out my hood, like an aerial. No one told me, and I then I did a few walk-around-in-a-circle-on-the-spot moves to try and get it off while they laughed. *sigh*

Easy!!!!! Just get a job where you wear a uniform and long hair tied back!!!! Jeans and sweat shirt to hard, change into uniform at work, spray Avon hair freshner into hair, tie it back - bingo!!!! Now I know why I chose a career in uniform. :) :)

my friend cuts her hair really really short and invested in a couple of good quality wigs. Hat on at the yard then wig on for work and socialising.

Erm, bit extreme!!

I have naturally wavy/curly hair, my hair routine is: wash every night when I have a shower, its not much effort then, its much more effort to try and keep it dry when I have a shower :) I use the Aussie shampoos and conditioner, it is amazing stuff! then I just go to bed and leave it to dry naturally. wake up in morning, decide how wild it looks, on a scale from 1 to 10, if its 7 or above, it gets put in a pony tail or a bun. if its anything under 7, it gets left to do its own thing, normally sorts itself out by the time I get to school.
blow drying dries out and damages the hair as well actually, so leaving it to dry naturally is much better. if you HAVE to straighten it, try not to do it every day, say maybe 2-3 times a week have your hair straightened and let down, the rest just put it up, loads of ideas on the internet for nice/cool hair do's that are quick and easy to do :) and before you straighten your hair, use heat protection spray on your hair, also get some heat protection shampoo and conditioner (aussie do ''take that heat'' shampoo and conditioner).
Nails, I use sally hensen nail growth miracle (its in a gold bottle), apply it and put colour nail varnish on top of it :) you can't see the horse dirt underneath but the nails themselves are being strengthened and conditioned :) just need to remember to take it all off and reapply every 4-5 days.
Before to bed, moisturise face, put a thick layer of vaseline on and around lips (stops them from cracking, drying out and keeps them nice and smooth), and generous amount of hand cream.
That's about it :) I may not look like a model but at least I look presentable :)
it sounds like a lot more effort than it actually is :)
