Hi All!!

Which shampoo do you use on your horse? Do you use "proper" horse shampoo or people shampoo like Pantene?

I've got a black black black horse who's only been with me since September so i'm yet to bath him but wondered what everybody else does at bath time, particularly coming into show season? Do you have a full beauty routine for Ed and Muffin, full of lotions and potions and colour enhancing shampoo or do you have a special brand of vodoo you stir up yourself, like Fairy liquid and windscreen wash for de-grease and sweet-smell or something equally mad?!!! :D

I have a glean grey so lots of scrubbing!

I use the Gallop (for greys) on stable stains and Aussie Mega Shampoo, Conditioner and Aussie 3-minute miracle on his tail...haha he gets more than me!

the best stuff ever!

or just cheapy dry/damaged hair shampoo from the supermarket for the first bath (looks like tar coming off!!)

washing up liquid for white socks a little goes a very very long way though so dont go mad.

the crux of making them shiny is not bathing so much that you strip all the natural oils, and rinsing them thoroughly, cold water is best aswell unless its a really stubborn stain.

Pony and I have the same shampoo, I have very sensitive skin so anything shampoo wise I can use on myself I figure I can use on my horse and as yet it's worked!

we currently have raspberry Alberto Balsalm and at £1 it's great!

My current routine consists of human and horse shampoo and a concuction that Theresa_F told me. I have a coloured hairy with lots of white feather who likes dirt. I use fairy liquid first on feather and tail, then Diamond White shampoo and then a mixture of ariel excel gel, vanish, fairy liquid, equine blue and tresemme. For his body, I wash with cheap shampoo and then tresemme deep clean. Takes a couple of hours but looks fab at a show :)

I've bought, at vast expense, virtually every make of horse-shampoo on the market, especially those that are supposed to remove stains from white hair. But I've always been disappointed with the results. However, I recently saw a video by Wayne Garrick on the Horse Hero site (www.horsehero.co.uk) who has a different approach. I'd better not give the game away though, as there's a small charge to watch the videos on Horse Hero, but it's well worth the small payment :-) There's lots of other great stuff on there too :-)

Hahahahahaha!! Ariel Exel Gel!! My friend has a woolly mammoth so she'll find that useful.

I'm lucky my young man has not a scrap of white on him, nowhere at all and he's black even in the sun. He could be a Lloyds Bank horse if he was a Trakhner but he's a TB! Tea Tree is good for skin as well isn't it? Did a dog bite I had on my backside whilst drunk the world of good!

So really nobody is averse to non-horse shampoo so long as its good stuff?! WIll get herbal essence for his tail - love a tail to look good as his is quite thin at the minute. :)

I use BC Bonacure products and a few other brands. During the Summer, since I've got a coloured of the more white variety, I use BC Bonacure Silver Shampoo and when coming into the Spring or for just a healthy touch up I use BC Bonacure Repair Rescure Shampoo.

It really does depend though. If I put colours in, I use a different type of colour save and usually spray on some leave in colour save conditioner. They don't last long since they're just vegetable based conditioning dyes but the conditioners help.
I only really use fancy products on the mane and tail and normal horse shampoo on the body. With the human products minimal contact with the skin is better, less irritation etc.
When you use human products you need to take into account the skin reactions your horse could get.

I have a bucket full of shampoos - oh the joy of coloureds!!!!

Use cheap shampoo for first wash and everyday clean up and cheap conditioner which i use all the time after every wash.

I love absorbine whitener for white bits, diamond white, cowboy magic yellow out and if all else fails fairy liquid mixed with purple spray.

Equine blue is lovely as a last rinse and apparently enhances dark colours as well as whites. Might be worth a try.

i use Kelco Stampede. its absolutely brilliant. i use it in my grooming parlour and tried it on my horse this summer. you have to dilute it 100-1 for dogs, but i use it stronger on the horse. it smells of citronella and contains only natural oils and no detergents. brilliant stuff for all the animals.

Tescos baby bath for daily washing after riding using an effol scrubby spongey contraption!

If going to a show - pantene pro v 2 in 1 every time! The shine and the softness is remarkable! Judges need sunglasses!!!

I use a horsey medicated shampoo mostly, but now I have grey I imagine I'll buy shaompoo meant to clean greys!

Tesco's tea tree shampoo...lovely for my scurfy sweet itcher in summer. I used Alvadazzle(?) after I've done his tail - it's a conditioning spray and makes it so easy to brush.

Well, I am experimenting with new shampoos, as new to the delights of white legs :p

I would normally use baby shampoo, but it dosent get the stains out as well as I would like, so use fairy liquid or stain remover spray if really bad!

I use the stain remover spray as an actual shampoo as it really is fantastic!

Thank god I'm not the only one that uses human shampoo's!! I usually use whatever's on offer at the time (normally herbal essances ;) ) but washing up liquid also works a treat. Although, for dirty socks and grey's, I swear by the diamond wash/purple shampoo, plus it smells gorgeous. Ahh, I love bathing. Can't wait for Mr.Sun to come back so we can all get scrubbing!

tesco s own shampoo, but the one up from the value one. still under £1 a bottle. to make them really shiny i do a final rinse with a bucket of water and a good glug glug of brown vinegar. takes the ph of the skin hair back to what it should be so they dont get greasy again quickly. i fnd washing up liquid is ok on bottom of tails but strips too much out of the coat/legs.
