Hello!
In a week and a bit i will be competing at burnt ash show in minch! and i do not have the money to go out and buy another 2 bottles of horsey shampoo for £20!!! (as ive just ran out of my shampoo!)
I am a bit funny with fairy liquid as ill use it on the tip of my horses tail to get any awful stains out but i would rather not use it on the horses body (just my preference im not saying its bad its just the way i do it)
So does anyone have any good shampoos that are not harsh on the skin??? but dont cost a lot?
No nasty comments please:)

I use baby shampoo and do not bathe too frequently. The milder the better for the skin and preserving oils - otherwise the coat will be dull and the horse may get dandruff.

You need to be careful with what you use as some substances (particularly herbal, fragrance-y stuff) added to human shampoos have the potential to cause skin reactions in a horse. Something only containing "natural", "plant-based" ingredients or whatever, does not make it horse-safe. (Ragwort would be a natural plant-based ingredient after all!) Mild shampoos intended for babies are usually a safe bet - products for adult human hair, conditioners etc are less certain (though plenty are just fine, of course).

Also keep in mind that the pH of a horse's skin is different to a human's. So pH-balanced shampoos will not work the same way on a horse.

Not true. Both human and horse skin are naturally slightly acidic with a pH of around 4.5 - 5.5

i use basic supermarket shampoo on my horses and find it works just as well as the expensive ones. Had 'apple' smelling one from sainsburys for ages which smelt great!

I also use baby shampoo. Or a tesco/boots etc own brand one. Very cheap and work well. I've never bought horse shampoo and have been competing for over 15 years!

When I've had a hair dying disaster and it's gone too dark I've been advised by hairdressers to use baby shampoo to strip out the colour as it's actually very harsh as well as H&S and Vosene. It worked and my hair was like straw after! I might be completely wrong but IMO I reckon Fairy's milder.
