A few other riders were wearing them too, when they were interviewing Shane I tried to have a good look to see what brand it is but all I could make out was "Pro" at the front. What brand hats were they does anyone know? Pretty hideous tbh...

They have been developed by Peter Charles following his fall. They are made along the lines of a motorbike helmet and take more impact from the top than the standard riding hat. They have grown on me, and you just can't put a value you on your head can you???

My OH asked why they had hats on that reminded him of WW1 helmets and I said at the time that they were probably really safe - you don't care what you look like when you're plummeting to earth!

I think they're horrible to look at but having read that they were developed by Peter Charles it makes sense. You cannot buy another head. I thought there must have been a reason them having such ugly hats on!

I can understand the reasoning behind them but surely they could be covered with traditional black or navy velvet? At the moment they look like wartime German soldiers; they're hideous!

They are called PROtector and in fact you can have them painted any colour / style you like. I think Nicky Boulter has one in blue with yellow 'stitching' painted on hers to match her jacket. I think they cost around £300 but the thing that put me off was the total lack of ventilation. My head already roasts in a Champion Ventair so god knows what it would do in one of them

Geoff Billington was having his fitted while we were there on saturday

Does anyone have a pic? I'd like to see them close up.

Think of a German SS soldier from WWII and you won't be far off. The colour schemes chosen by Geoff and Shane don't help though....metallic black with a metallic silver 'splodge' on top....oh yes, and their national flag painted on the side

they looked foul... my parents also commented on they looked like something out of WW1/2...

might look ok in just black, but dont look very smart for sj

what made me laugh reading this is everyone saying how safe they are, but in prize giving where were their hats???? ERrrrr not on their heads

Were for sale at Hickstead; have been designed by Peter Charles I believe.

Also come in a range of colours, including pink

I think they'll grow on people (hopefully not like a fungus !)...

I remember the days before vented helmets when everyone wore old tatty beaglers with no chinstrap

The horsey world doesn't adopt change well, but you've only got to look at the number of Speed Air's out there now to realise that the PROtector is here to stay...especially as it's so customisable (sp).

I remember when the GPA style hats first came out -I think Hugo Simon was one of the first to wear them, and they looked really strange. I'm sure these new hats will catch on.
