I loved the pony!
He was really fun to ride, a bit quirky but not at all nasty.
I'm having slight reservations about the yard though. It's a rather odd setup - with loads of owners who never come and see their horses, Monty's included, and hence lots of sharers. The YO runs the sharing thing as a kind of business, with loads of people paying £100 a month to share horses.
The owners weren't there today, and it seems the YO has much more say over what does and doesn't happen to the horses - it was she who said I could ride the pony. I was a bit alarmed by the bit - an American gag I think - a monster of a thing anyway, and was wondering what I'd let myself in for with this pony!
He was quite keen on the flat, but only in a fun way, not strong, or at least not with such a gadget in his gob! If I do share him and I have any say in the matter, I'll be trying him in something milder. I didn't want to ride him in the gag today as I've never seen anything like it and wouldn't really know how to use it, but couldn't really say no. I did wonder at the time, and I've since found out (from a helpful PM) that it was on upside down, so although the pony seemed quite happy in his mouth I don't know whether to post the pictures in case I get shouted at!
He's definitely more of a jumper that a stressage machine, and has obviously been allowed to go at his fences at full pelt. Generally, though, he sorted himself out onto a perfect stride anyway, although we only jumped tiny.
He was really friendly in the stable as well, easy to catch etc. As well as the little things I've already said, the downside is this:
It sounds as if everyone pays £100 a month, regardless of whether their horse lives in or out, what work they're in etc. I get the impression that amount is the YO's idea, not Monty's owner's, but it means that for £100 a month, I get a grass kept pony who may not need any hard food all winter, and at the mo isn't shod (although that might change), whereas others get horses which need all sorts of faddy feeding and shoes, plus shavings and mucking out. Bit odd really. What do you think?
Sorry for long post!
Thanks,
Rosie x
