I loved the pony!

He was really fun to ride, a bit quirky but not at all nasty.

I'm having slight reservations about the yard though. It's a rather odd setup - with loads of owners who never come and see their horses, Monty's included, and hence lots of sharers. The YO runs the sharing thing as a kind of business, with loads of people paying £100 a month to share horses.

The owners weren't there today, and it seems the YO has much more say over what does and doesn't happen to the horses - it was she who said I could ride the pony. I was a bit alarmed by the bit - an American gag I think - a monster of a thing anyway, and was wondering what I'd let myself in for with this pony!

He was quite keen on the flat, but only in a fun way, not strong, or at least not with such a gadget in his gob! If I do share him and I have any say in the matter, I'll be trying him in something milder. I didn't want to ride him in the gag today as I've never seen anything like it and wouldn't really know how to use it, but couldn't really say no. I did wonder at the time, and I've since found out (from a helpful PM) that it was on upside down, so although the pony seemed quite happy in his mouth I don't know whether to post the pictures in case I get shouted at!

He's definitely more of a jumper that a stressage machine, and has obviously been allowed to go at his fences at full pelt. Generally, though, he sorted himself out onto a perfect stride anyway, although we only jumped tiny.

He was really friendly in the stable as well, easy to catch etc. As well as the little things I've already said, the downside is this:

It sounds as if everyone pays £100 a month, regardless of whether their horse lives in or out, what work they're in etc. I get the impression that amount is the YO's idea, not Monty's owner's, but it means that for £100 a month, I get a grass kept pony who may not need any hard food all winter, and at the mo isn't shod (although that might change), whereas others get horses which need all sorts of faddy feeding and shoes, plus shavings and mucking out. Bit odd really. What do you think?

Sorry for long post!
Thanks,
Rosie x

Hmm it does sound a bit odd, and where would you stand if for example the pony was injured while in your care, ie out hacking etc?

If the owners arent aware, or arent fully aware of the arrangement, there could be all kinds of complications.

I mean is the pony even insured?

Personally I would stay clear, espec if the owners are the kind not to show up, because you can guarantee the day the pony comes in lame it will be down to you and not down to their lack of care for the horse!

They're all very good points - thanks a lot! I will ask my friend who also shares there what she does in terms of insurance (I already have rider-only insurance but that doesn't answer your question about the pony), but will probably do as you say and give up on the idea.

im sorry I put a downer on things, but these things only seem to end in heartache, it sounds like the YO isnt too clued up either if his bit wasin upside down.

Also £100 is a lot, how much woud you be riding?

I used to charge £15 a week, and the girl could ride as much as she wanted and do whatever she wanted with the horse.

I'd be riding 3 days a week.

I have to say I'd heard an "interesting" report about this yard before, but have two friends who are there at the moment and they really like it, so I thought I'd go and see for myself - maybe the first person was right.

will you have a contract? or a written agreement?

I know it sounds awfully formal but in cases like this if you want to go ahead then its essential, to protect youself.

I would personally keep looking though, there shoud be plenty around at this time of year!

I doubt it! So as you say I think it's best to leave it - thanks for raising my awareness. I've always known about contracts and insurance etc for loaning and sharing, but am ashamed to say it didn't cross my mind today!

As to there being plenty of horses around, in theory there should...but close enough to London, only wanting a maximum of 3 days a week including weekends?

and not wanting tooooo much money?

The fact that I can only, at absolute maximum, do two days after school - and only that if the yard is quickly reached by public transport - really limits my options.

Hmmm I know the YO of the plce giggles went and I suspect the bit was not in the wrong way round, she knows a thing or two about horses...

Don't know enough about the situation but defo get your parents to work out a contract for any share. I got left in a horrible sticky mess when I was younger over a share pony. Not going into details on here but it's not worth the heartache/stress.

However, good luck!

Why do you need to pay for a share horse anyway? I had a lass help me out with my horse while I was at uni, she could do whatever she wanted with him, ride him whenever she wanted in return for mucking out etc. Seems like more of a fair deal to me-help look after the horse in return for a ride?

where abouts in London are you? where is the yard?

I live in London and there are lots of horse shares in Epping Forest, you can go from the central line there. I have had a couple of shares there and they cost about £30 to £40 a week for 3 rides a week DIY.

So yes - that does sound a bit steep in price!

If it was central London though - thats a different matter...

I used to have a sharer for my TB until I put him out on loan and I can honestly say the thought never crossed my mind to ask for a contribution....I shod him, fed him and everything and as long as I knew she could ride anywhere up to four days a week.....

Jeez, it never occurred to me I could have had a little help with costs lol
