Ah we keep him plaited. Because it's so long he gets straw, hay, mud and all sorts in it. So it's plaited down into about 5 plaits, covered in pig oil to stop it getting itchy, and we re-plait once a week or more if we get time. Unfortunately his last plait by his withers is no longer, he rubbed it off at the end of summer when it got midgybut when it's down you can't really notice!
I've got a friesian too - I keep his mane in braids as well, and this seems to keep it under control and minimise breakage. I'd never heard of the pig oil tip - so thank you. Do you liberally cover it in pig oil, or just a wee bit? Is his forelock braided as well?
Sorry for all the questions, but Friesian hair pre occupies me quite a lot these days!
I think I am in love!!!
I don't know what other people do, but I apply pig oil with a spray bottle to my fell pony's mane. First I put the mane onto the wrong side of the neck and spray oil, then I put the mane back over to the right side and spray. Then leave it for 10 minutes or so, brush gently with a soft brush and plait. I don't plait his forelock, but it is much shorter than his mane so doesn't get tangled.
