Shared stable?

Hi all, long time lurker after some advice!

I currently have my two at home; my 6yo ridden horse and an older companion Shetland. Keeping them at home was no issue with my old boy, but realistically the new ridden horse needs more work than what I’m able to do from home. Our hacking is limited and we have no facilities so have to box for most rides, which has lead to me considering livery.

My yard of choice is lovely and only ten minutes down the road, we’re frequent visitors to hire the school, but the chances of two stables becoming available are slim to none. However, yo has informed me that there is a larger stable that will become available and suggested the two boys could share. I’ve not seen it yet so not sure on the size, but I’ve never considered doing this before so wondered if others have experience?

It’s not something I would consider at livery. At home they tend to not have as much going on..at livery there will be hubub and the little one may get in the big ones way..or someone could open the door letting the little one out..etc etc

If the stable was big enough to be allowed to pop in a partition then yes.

I think it is the lack of space in an emergency that concerns me, particularly with the 6yo being age appropriately unaware of his large body, though I’m not sure exactly how much room there is yet.
I think moving them together and putting them in the same stable will cause issues especially when you want to ride I personally wouldn't do it.
I’m fairly confident they would cope with this well enough, Shetland is used to being on his own and is not interested in anything other than food! I do partly wonder whether I could keep him at home on his own, but I’ve always thought that may be a little cruel regardless of how he reacts.
Id never let any of mine share
A very content pair!

Thanks all, sounds as if it may be a possibility. I’ve arranged to go and see the stable later today, yo seems to think it’s a good idea so I’ll keep an open mind. Both would be out during the day and have ad lib hay at night anyway so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
Mine share when in, and seem happier for having company tbh.
This is good to hear, otherwise I might find myself putting the big lad at livery and looking for another companion to keep the Shetland company at home…

Does she actually mean physically share the stable? At the same time? When I needed to move yards once, my two 'shared a stable', but that meant if one was in, the other was out. So my mare was in for the night, then when she went out for the day, my gelding came in. Maybe this is the arrangement that they had in mind.

Little update, went to investigate the stable. It’s a mare and foal box so in theory plenty of room, however I was a little shocked when yo said that it would be £400/month. Livery for one is £200, and of course both horses will be eating hay and taking up grazing room, but I did expect some sort of discount for two in a stable! Unfortunately no room for manoeuvre so back to the drawing board.

Can the shetland not stay at home? You wont have any problems finding a small companion for them. You can probably even find someone who will pay to cover their costs for their pony to live with you on retirement style livery.
This is probably the most likely solution as I would miss having horses at home after so long, but I’ve been trying to downsize!

This is what I thought you meant!!

A few yards I’ve been at have done this, one out in the day and other out a night. I think as long as you are happy with the hygiene side of things and keeping check of work counts etc it shouldn’t be an issue

wow! double price for both in same stable and with one being a Shetland?! I think you have your answer!

I've know two ponies share a stable but the stable was divided into two smaller stables with a low wooden partition with a door. You had to go through the front stable to get to the to back one.
