I am thinking on getting a sharer for my pony as I am getting more and more pregnant and I just can't give him the riding he would like.

He's likely to be kept in a field locally (Taunton area), so I guess it would have to be a sharer who was into hacking. That said pony is a super jumper with some developing flatwork and I'd like to build on this. There is an arena for hire within hacking distance.

The issue is that pony is only 14hh, haflinger but not very stocky. I wouldn't like to see him carrying more than about 9.5 stone - especially if he was going to jump. He is however, not a novice ride if you want to school or jump as he is quite sharp and very sensitive and can get strong over a course of fences.

I can't see a kid on him, perhaps a teenager yes but he really does need quite a 'mature' rider as he responds to patient sensitive riding rather than Go Go Go IYKWIM.

He's good to hack - generally goes on a long rein and is sensible in traffic although heavy traffic can make him 'twitchy' and he will take a good look at bags in the hedgerows. Nothing I consider dangerous or scarey and I trust him implicitly with my unborn baby but its more knowing how to handle him and staying calm if he gets worried - so many riders get nervous if the horse is nervous and that *could* be a recipie for disaster with this particular pony. I just laugh at him usually and we get on fine! But I worry that I won't be able to find the right person for him and me... how can I word an ad to get what I want do you think?

I'm also worried cos I have to admit I am totally precious about this pony - I've never felt like this about a pony before but I'm sooooo protective.

Can I have some sharer stories and advice on how to find that perfect person who loves your pony like you do? Also how you found them, things to look out for etc?

Well I am a sharer and I think he sounds like a cracking little pony. It should be fine for you to state a weight limit and adults only - I know many of the adverts on NFED are laid out this way.

It may be difficult to 'share' at first in terms of letting someone else ride your pony. Nevertheless, if you find the right person it can help both financially and time-wise. My advice is get references from potential sharers, give them a trial period first to make sure they are compatible and try not to be overbearing or the opposite not care at all.

I put a add on HorseShares UK and have just got myself a lovely girl who is 21,but acts alot older...........I have lost my nerve, and won't ride and needed a very confident person to ride him.....it's early days, but she appears to love him, already.I had alot of responce to my add on there and was lucky to have a pick of a sharer....I admit I'm not charging any thing and she can ride when she wants....and we get along well despite an age gap,and she is perfect for him.
I'm like you he is my baby, and I have invested alot of time and money in him,so wanted the perfect match.I did put a weight restriction on him up to 12 stone, and I was very honest about all of his little ways.Might be worth a try and only cost me £1.99 to place an add,and all I can say at the mo is it was money well spent....I have her on a 3 month trail at the mo,but fingers crossed it will be extended...Good Luck in your search.

thanks, that sounds reassuring. I'm torn because on the one hand I'd like a teen who would do a bit of XC on him etc but on the other hand I want someone who is happy to give him a 1/2 walk schooling session if that is what it takes to get that perfect long and low outline before you trot... I am far too fussy LOL

What is NFED?

I have a sharer and it's win-win as far as I'm concerned:
-She hacks T so I know he's getting a variety of exercise and if don't have time, she will
-She mucks out half the week
-She pays £40 a month and goes splitsies on farrier's bills
-She sometimes buys new boots, brushes, sprays etc.
She gets a horse to ride without the responsibility and I get my load lightened. Couldn't be happier with the arrengement.
