a while ago I posted asking if It would be okay to ask the owner of my share if I could come to watch the dentist etc as I was interested to see/learn.
so that all was okay, I was nervous to ask as didn't want to be interfering but she was happy for me to come and I have since been to watch the farrier as well.

anyway, when I was at a riding school almost 2 years ago, I had the most amazing instructor. got me from trotting around the arena over and over at my old riding school to cantering and jumping 2'9 within 4 weeks..
He has now left the RS and gone freelance. my questions is, would it be quite offensive to ask If I could have lessons on my share horse. the owner helps me with schooling and basically gives me free lessons but me & my mum would like to book a one off lesson with the instructor just to catch up really and get another persons view on my position etc which is what I want to improve.

I guess im so paranoid about the owner hating me!!! because she gives me lessons I dont want her to think I dont appreciate them and think she is a rubbish teacher- she's not at all and I love it when she gives me things to improve on.

It would only be a one off lesson or maybe a couple from my mum as an x mas pressie. sooo what do you think???

well if you don't ask you'll never know - just say I don't want to offend you or anything but ...... and give her the whole story - especially as it will just be the odd treat -don't think I would be bothered but then I'm not easily offended.

I wouldn't mind, I would rather a sharer get "proper" lessons.

You could just say something like, I really like having my lessons with you but I was thinking about maybe having some with my old instructor, if you don't mind. You could also ask if the owner wants to come along with you to see the instructor as he's teaching you that way she knows what sort of instructor he is and my put her more at ease?

That is what I would do, and like I said I wouldn't be cross with a sharer for asking.

As long as you ask in the right way, I can't see it being a problem... Just say that it's someone you really clicked with before, and your mum offered to get you a couple of lessons as a pressie. Perhaps ask if she wants to come watch too? Then she's included, and she can see how he teaches - if she's got any sense, she should know that sometimes people explain things differently and it makes more sense -and that different instructors pick up on different things.

If he's a good local instructor, she may have heard of him anyway :) She may even want a go - that's how a lot of instructors get picked up at my yard :)

I've had a few shares and all owners have been happy for me to have lessons.
There are a few people with sharers on my current yard and all the owners are happy for sharers to have lessons, in one case where the rider is schooling she pays towards it. Go for it!

I'd be absolutely fine with that if you were my sharer - in fact more than fine I'd be pleased you wanted to :)

And, as a sharer I would expect to be able to have lessons with an instructor I respected and trusted.

I have regular lessons on 'my owners' other horse (who I don't officially share!) she is happy for me to do this and I ask her each time and make sure she is happy with the time/date/what I'm doing/any aids I'm using etc.
K x

I am a sharer currently and I have lessons on my share. Owner has never had a problem with it - in fact she recommended the instructor for me.

From an owner's point of view surely its a good thing that someone experience is technically supervising your riding?

If I had sharers for my horses I would love the sharer to take an interest in anything apart from riding. So yes ask her, but dont be surprised if they want a say in the instructor.

if they did I wouldn't bother with lessons, the point is to just have a lesson with my old instructor (for the sake of it really!!) and for a catch up/chat/see how my riding's going :)

On all 4 of my share horses I have had lessons, none of the owners minded although one did say she didn't want me jumping with my instructor, so I didn't and used hers instead. I would ask :)

i've just text her asking ahah im so nervous its a bit silly!! I dont jump anyway so that wouldnt be a problem, it would just be half an hour flat lesson x

Don't be nervous! As someone who has had people sharing my horses for years I love it when they show enough interest to want to look at stuff like the dentist, vet, physio, etc. And any request for lessons/instruction can only be of benefit to both horse and rider. The owner will probably just be very happy that you care enough to want to do all of this.

she said no to my instructor but happy for me to have them with her's. so basically a no the ahah oh well if you dont ask you dont get :)

It's her horse so I guess she can choose, but if it were me, I'd be tempted to watch you with the instructor before telling you no unless the horse is a high level competition horse. I'm a little surprised at her saying no unless she knows the instructor and doesn't like the way he teaches.

yeah I respect her decision, its her horse at the end of the day so cant complain, she's letting me ride him so Im grateful for that!
ahah defo not a competition horse, and she doesn't know the instructor at all

It's her decision, but I'm surprised she said no. I know which instructor you mean, (as I'm from the area too) and don't see why she'd be reluctant to have him teach you.

Maybe ask again in a few months?

I've seen previous posts where you mention the riding school you were at - I used to have my horses there too, plus I'm friends with him on facebook and know he's just gone freelance.Don't panic, I'm not stalking you! :D
