sharer question

basically i have 2 horses and only really have time for one. so i found someone to ride other horse. she pays me £10 a ride which just about covers his shoeing cost, but OH said she should also help do a few chores like do his stable on day she rides etc.

what do you guys think?

Have you got a contract between the two of you? If not, get one!

Shares and part loan vary so much between owner to owner, that the best bet is to decide what you want from a sharer - do you want someone to just exercise your other horse, do you want a riding/hacking/competing partner or do you want some of your time freed up that would otherwise be spent mucking out?

For example - if the horse is on part/full livery, then you are unlikely to need help with mucking out and may just want your horse ridden twice a week if you can't. Alternatively, someone else might have a herd of 7 horses on grass livery and want a companion to ride with or someone else might want two days off a week from having their horse on DIY and want their horse mucked out, groomed, fields poo-picked, fed etc by the sharer as well as ridden!

Figure out what you want, discuss it with your sharer and put it all down in a contract. It will save much less hassle

she cant be riding him much if £10 a ride is only covering shoeing cost. I wouldn’t want a sharer who rode that little. perhaps if you arranged a weekly rate then she could ride more often without feeling out of pocket and would be willing to help with chores. but at £10 a ride I personally wouldn’t be willing to do chores! sorry

my sharer pays £100 a month, and she rides up to 3 times a week, I dont expect her to do any chores. But she does muck out occasionaly when she has time because she enjoys that side of thing aswell.

IMO if it would help you out then yes, if someone just wants to ride a horse then go to a RS but if you want more than what a ridding school can give, a better horse to ride and be more involved so you share then you should be prepared to help out with chores and pay towards keep.
Its part and parcel of having horses and yes they are doing you a faver but you are also doing them 1!
